🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement

On your Equinox, the starter is mounted low on the engine and access is tight. The job usually requires disconnecting the battery, removing intake ducting, and reaching the starter from above and below.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter wiring.
  • The starter is connected to high-current power and can spark if shorted.
  • Keep hands clear of the belt drive and cooling fan area.
  • If you raise the vehicle, support it with jack stands before going underneath.
  • Let the engine cool fully before starting work.

  • Wait at least 2 minutes before touching starter wiring.
  • Take a photo of every wire before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back into contact.

Step 2: Remove intake ducting

  • Use a flat blade screwdriver or trim removal tool to loosen the intake tube clamps and remove the air intake ducting if it blocks access.
  • Set the clamps and ducting aside in order.

Step 3: Raise and support the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support the Equinox on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Make sure the vehicle is stable before going underneath.

Step 4: Locate the starter

  • Find the starter on the engine/transmission bellhousing area.
  • On this V6, access is usually from below with some top-side reach possible.

Step 5: Disconnect starter wiring

  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to remove the main battery cable nut from the starter terminal.
  • Remove the smaller control wire connector carefully.
  • Do not let the power wire touch metal.

Step 6: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Use the correct 15mm socket with extensions to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Support the starter with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Remove the starter from the vehicle.

Step 7: Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter in place by hand.
  • Install the mounting bolts finger-tight first, then tighten with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the starter wiring

  • Reconnect the electrical connectors to the starter.
  • Tighten the main power terminal nut with a 10mm socket or 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall intake parts and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the intake ducting and tighten the clamps with a flat blade screwdriver.
  • Lower the Equinox from the jack stands.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.

Step 10: Test the repair

  • Start the engine and listen for normal cranking.
  • Check for loose wiring or warning lights.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine several times to confirm consistent engagement.
  • Check the battery terminals for tightness.
  • Make sure no wires are touching hot or moving parts.
