🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement

The starter on your Rogue sits low on the engine and is easiest to reach from the top after removing the air intake duct and battery area components. This job is mostly bolt-and-connector work, but space is tight, so take your time and keep track of every clip and connector.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter. The starter has direct battery power.
  • Make sure the ignition is OFF and the key/fob is away from the vehicle.
  • Support any removed intake or battery tray parts so nothing falls into the engine bay.
  • Let the engine cool before starting. Nearby parts can be hot.
  • Keep metal tools away from the battery positive terminal.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool

  • Battery terminal protective cover - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Shift to PARK and chock the wheels if needed.
  • Open the hood and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable first, then wait a few minutes before starting.
  • Keep track of bolt lengths.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket or battery terminal wrench to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.

Step 2: Remove the air intake duct

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or ratchet with the correct socket to loosen the intake hose clamps.
  • Remove any air duct clips with a trim clip removal tool.
  • Lift the duct out of the way to open access to the starter area.

Step 3: Remove any obstructing battery tray pieces

  • If needed for access, remove the battery hold-down using a 12mm socket.
  • If the battery tray blocks access, remove it with a 12mm socket and set it aside.
  • Label every fastener as you remove it.

Step 4: Locate and disconnect the starter wiring

  • Find the starter on the engine/transmission bellhousing area.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the main power wire nut from the starter terminal.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if a connector lock needs to be released, then unplug the small control connector.
  • Move both wires aside so they will not snag during removal.

Step 5: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket, ratchet, and long extension to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Support the starter with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Remove the starter from the vehicle.
  • Torque on installation: 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter in place by hand first.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand using a 14mm socket to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the bolts evenly, then finish with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)

Step 7: Reconnect the starter wiring

  • Reconnect the small control connector until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the main power wire on the terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the nut snugly. Do not overtighten.

Step 8: Reinstall intake parts and battery tray pieces

  • Reinstall the battery tray or hold-down parts using a 12mm socket.
  • Reinstall the intake duct and tighten the clamps with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Make sure all hoses and clips are fully seated.

Step 9: Reconnect the battery and test

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and listen for normal cranking.
  • Check for warning lights and make sure the starter engagement sounds smooth.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the Rogue several times to confirm consistent cranking.
  • Check that the battery terminal is tight and the cable is secure.
  • Make sure the intake duct is sealed and no hoses were left loose.
  • If the engine still only clicks or does not crank, the battery, starter relay, or ground circuit should be tested next.
