How to Replace the Starter Motor on a 2006-2010 Chevrolet Malibu (Engine: V6 3.9L)
Step-by-step DIY instructions with required tools, parts list, wiring tips, and torque specs for 2006, 2007
🔧 Malibu - Starter Motor Replacement
Your Malibu’s starter is the electric motor that cranks the engine when you turn the key. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, accessing the starter from underneath, swapping the unit, and reconnecting the wiring correctly.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative cable before touching starter wiring (prevents short circuits).
- ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands on solid, level ground; never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool completely; the starter sits near hot exhaust components.
- ⚠️ Keep the battery cable away from metal while disconnected (it can arc).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic gloves
- Metric socket set (7mm, 10mm, 13mm, 15mm)
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 3/8" drive extensions (3", 6", 12")
- 3/8" drive swivel/universal joint
- Metric combination wrench set (10mm, 13mm, 15mm)

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Starter motor assembly - Qty: 1
- Starter electrical terminal nut kit - Qty: 1
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Open the hood and disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative (–) cable first, then position it so it can’t spring back.
- Raise the front of the car with a floor jack and set it securely on jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Use a 7mm socket or 10mm socket (varies by fastener) with a 3/8" ratchet to remove the fasteners.
- Use a flat trim tool to pop any plastic clips loose without breaking them.
Step 2: Locate the starter and identify the wires
- The starter is mounted low on the engine/transmission area, accessed from underneath.
- You’ll typically see: the big battery cable on the large stud, and a smaller “signal” wire on a smaller terminal.
- Take a quick photo before removal.
Step 3: Disconnect the starter wiring
- Use a 13mm socket (or 13mm wrench) to remove the nut on the large battery cable stud, then pull the cable off.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the nut on the small signal wire terminal (or carefully release the connector if it’s a push-on style).
- Move the wiring aside so it can’t get pinched during removal/installation.
Step 4: Remove the starter mounting bolts
- Support the starter with one hand.
- Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and a 6" extension (add a swivel/universal joint if needed) to remove the mounting bolts.
- Lower the starter out carefully once the bolts are out.
Step 5: Install the new starter
- Position the new starter into place by hand.
- Thread the mounting bolts in by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
- Tighten the mounting bolts with a 15mm socket, then Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.
Step 6: Reconnect the starter wiring
- Apply a light smear of dielectric grease to the electrical connections (helps prevent corrosion).
- Install the large battery cable on the starter stud and tighten the nut using a 13mm socket to Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the small signal wire and tighten using a 10mm socket to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
- Confirm the cables are routed away from exhaust/rotating parts.
Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the car
- Reinstall the lower splash shield using a 7mm socket or 10mm socket.
- Raise slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the car.
Step 8: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the battery negative (–) cable using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten securely (snug plus a little); don’t over-tighten the battery post.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm it cranks strongly with no clicking/grinding.
- With the engine running, listen underneath for any abnormal rubbing noises.
- Recheck that the starter wiring is not touching the exhaust and that all fasteners are tight.
