🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement

The starter on your Camry sits low on the engine/transmission side and is buried under the intake and air plumbing. This job is doable at home, but space is tight and you must disconnect the battery before touching the starter cables.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting. The starter cable is always hot.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the car. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
  • Keep metal tools away from the battery positive cable and starter terminal.
  • The intake manifold and nearby parts may be hot if the engine was recently run.
  • Use care around connectors and vacuum hoses. They are easy to crack or tear.

  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3/8-inch extension set
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Battery terminal wrench
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the shift lever to Park.
  • Open the hood and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing any starter wiring.
  • Take a photo before unplugging anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect battery power

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.

Step 2: Remove the air intake assembly

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or 10mm socket to loosen the intake tube clamps.
  • Unplug any attached intake sensors with your fingers.
  • Remove the air cleaner duct and resonator as needed to open access above the transmission side of the engine.
  • Label every connector before removal.

Step 3: Remove the upper intake components if needed for access

  • If the starter is blocked, remove the upper intake manifold using a 10mm socket and 12mm socket.
  • Disconnect the throttle body and vacuum lines carefully.
  • Replace the intake manifold gasket set during reassembly.
  • Tighten intake manifold fasteners to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Disconnect the starter wiring

  • Locate the starter on the bellhousing area.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the nut from the main battery cable terminal.
  • Remove the control connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight off.
  • Keep the cable ends clear of metal.

Step 5: Remove the starter motor

  • Use a 14mm socket, long extension, and ratchet to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Support the starter with one hand as you remove the final bolt.
  • Lower the starter out of the engine bay.
  • Tighten starter mounting bolts to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs) during installation.

Step 6: Install the new starter motor

  • Position the new starter in place and start both mounting bolts by hand.
  • Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Reconnect the starter control connector.
  • Reinstall the main battery cable and tighten the nut with a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the starter cable nut to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall removed intake parts

  • Reinstall the intake manifold if removed, using new gaskets.
  • Reconnect all vacuum hoses, sensors, and throttle body connectors.
  • Install the air intake duct and tighten the clamps with a flat-blade screwdriver or 10mm socket.

Step 8: Restore battery power

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Make sure the terminal is snug and cannot twist by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for a clean crank.
  • Check that no warning lights appear on the dash.
  • Inspect the starter area for loose wires or leftover tools.
  • If the engine cranks but does not start, recheck the main starter cable and control connector.
  • One-click start should sound smooth and immediate.
