🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement

Your Explorer uses six spark plugs, one per cylinder. This job means removing the ignition coils, taking out the old plugs, and installing new ones with the correct gap and torque. Work carefully so you do not crack a new plug or damage a coil boot.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before starting. Hot aluminum cylinder heads can be damaged by removing plugs too soon.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing ignition coils.
  • Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells. Debris can fall into the cylinders.
  • Do not use anti-seize on modern plated spark plug threads unless the plug maker specifically says to.
  • Use a torque wrench. Over-tightening can strip the cylinder head.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 5/8-inch spark plug socket
  • 6-inch extension
  • Torque wrench
  • 10mm socket
  • 10mm wrench
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Compressed air
  • Feeler gauge
  • Dielectric grease
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plug set - Qty: 6
  • Valve cover gasket set - Qty: 1
  • Ignition coil boots - Qty: 6

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully. This is important on a V6 because the rear plugs sit close to hot components.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Label parts as you remove them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect battery power

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover

  • Pull up gently on the engine cover. It is held on by rubber grommets.
  • If it feels stuck, use a flat-blade trim tool carefully under the edge.

Step 3: Remove ignition coils

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove each coil hold-down bolt.
  • Twist each coil slightly, then pull it straight up.
  • Inspect the coil boots for cracks, oil, or carbon tracking.

Step 4: Clean the plug wells

  • Use compressed air to blow dirt away from each plug well.
  • This keeps debris out of the cylinder when the plug comes out.

Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Use a 5/8-inch spark plug socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to loosen each plug.
  • Turn slowly at first. If a plug feels stuck, work it back and forth gently.
  • Remove all six plugs one at a time.

Step 6: Check and gap the new plugs

  • Use a feeler gauge to verify the gap matches spec for your replacement plugs.
  • If the plugs are pre-gapped, still check them before install.
  • Never force the gap wider by prying hard.

Step 7: Install the new spark plugs

  • Thread each plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 5/8-inch spark plug socket and extension to snug them down.
  • Then use a torque wrench to tighten to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall ignition coils

  • Add a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
  • Push each coil straight down onto the spark plug.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bolts with a 10mm socket and torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reassemble and reconnect power

  • Reinstall the engine cover.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Make sure the terminal is tight.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth idle.
  • Check for a misfire light on the dash.
  • If the engine shakes or runs rough, recheck coil seating and plug torque.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
