How to Replace the Side View Mirror on a 2021 Nissan Altima (LH/RH)
Step-by-step door panel removal, wiring disconnect, tools/parts list, safety tips, and torque guidance

🔧 Altima - Side View Mirror Replacement
Replacing a side mirror on your Altima usually means removing the interior door trim, unplugging the mirror harness, and swapping the mirror assembly. The exact steps change if your mirror has a camera (Around View Monitor), heating, turn signal, or power-fold.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (per side)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Disconnect the negative battery cable to reduce airbag risk (door harness work).
- 🛑 Do not probe yellow connectors; yellow = SRS/airbag circuits.
- 🛑 Support the mirror when removing nuts so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
- 🛑 Protect painted edges with painter’s tape before pulling trim.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket

- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Trim removal tool set (plastic)
- Pick tool
- Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range ft-lb)
- Painter’s tape
- Shop towel
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic gloves
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Side view mirror assembly (LH driver or RH passenger, correct options) - Qty: 1
- Door trim panel clips - Qty: 5-10
- Mirror sail panel clips (if damaged) - Qty: 1-3
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition off.
- Lower the window on the side you’re working on (gives you room).
- Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
- “Trim tool” = a plastic pry tool to avoid scratches.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which mirror you’re replacing
- Before you buy parts: confirm Driver (LH) or Passenger (RH).
- Also confirm options: heated, turn signal, power-fold, and whether there’s a camera under the mirror.
Step 2: Remove the interior sail panel (triangle trim by the mirror)
- Apply painter’s tape along the edge near the sail panel to protect the door trim.
- Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to carefully pry the sail panel outward.
- If it has a tweeter speaker, unplug the connector using a pick tool to lift the lock tab (don’t pull on wires).
Step 3: Remove the door switch panel
- Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to lift the window/lock switch panel.
- Unplug the connectors. Use a pick tool to release stubborn locks.
Step 4: Remove the door trim panel
- Find and remove the hidden screws:
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw(s) in the inner door pull/handle area (typically behind small covers you can pop with a pick tool).
- Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to pop the door panel clips around the edges.
- Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window channel.
- Disconnect any remaining connectors and the door handle cable (note its routing for reassembly).
- Work slowly—clips break when forced.
Step 5: Peel back the water shield carefully
- Use your hands and a shop towel to slowly peel back the plastic water shield near the mirror area.
- Try not to tear the butyl (sticky black sealant). You’ll reuse it.
Step 6: Unplug the mirror electrical connector(s)
- Locate the mirror harness connector inside the door near the mirror mount.
- Use a pick tool to lift the locking tab, then unplug.
- If equipped with a camera, there may be additional connector routing—trace it and free any harness clips by hand.
Step 7: Remove the mirror mounting nuts
- Support the mirror with one hand from the outside.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the mirror mounting nuts (usually 3 nuts).
- Remove the mirror assembly and feed the harness through the opening.
Step 8: Install the new mirror
- Feed the new mirror harness through the opening and set the mirror on the studs.
- Hand-start all nuts to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the nuts evenly using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Final-tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb or low-range ft-lb).
- Torque spec depends on the exact mirror bracket and door style on your Altima. If you tell me Driver or Passenger and whether you have a camera and/or power-fold, I’ll give you the correct factory torque for your exact setup.
Step 9: Reconnect wiring and secure the harness
- Plug in the mirror connector(s) until they click.
- Reinstall any harness clips by pressing them back into their holes by hand.
- Make sure the harness won’t rub the window track.
Step 10: Reinstall the water shield and door panel
- Press the water shield back into the butyl sealant firmly with your fingers.
- Reconnect the door handle cable and all electrical connectors.
- Hang the door panel on the top lip (by the window), then press clips back in around the edges.
- Reinstall screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Step 11: Reinstall the switch panel and sail panel
- Plug in the switch panel connectors and snap the panel back in using your hands.
- Reconnect tweeter (if equipped) and press the sail panel back into place.
âś… After Repair
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Test mirror functions: adjust left/right/up/down, heating (if equipped), power-fold (if equipped), and turn signal (if equipped).
- If equipped with the Around View Monitor camera: confirm the side camera view works and the image is stable while driving slowly in a safe area.
- Check window operation to ensure the harness is not interfering.
