🔧 Sierra 1500 - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing the side mirror on your Sierra 1500 is mainly an interior door-trim removal job so you can access the mirror’s mounting nuts and electrical connector. The steps are very similar for left or right, but the exact connector/features can change the mirror you need.

Quick questions (so you buy the correct mirror): Which side are you replacing (driver/left or passenger/right)? And does your mirror have heat, turn signal, power-fold, or blind spot (triangle icon in the glass)?

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ If your door has a side airbag, keep the key OFF and disconnect the battery before unplugging door wiring.
  • ⚠️ Support the mirror when removing the nuts so it doesn’t fall and scratch paint.
  • ⚠️ Use plastic trim tools to avoid breaking clips and scratching panels.
  • ⚠️ Keep screws organized; lengths can differ.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • 7mm socket
  • Trim removal tool set (plastic)
  • Small flat screwdriver
  • Pick tool
  • Torque wrench (in-lb) 20–200 in-lb
  • Painters tape
  • Magnetic parts tray
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (correct side & options) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel retainers/clips - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the key OFF.
  • Lower the window on the door you’re working on (helps with handling the panel).
  • Apply painters tape around the mirror base on the outside to protect the paint.
  • If equipped with a door-mounted side airbag: disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and wait at least 2 minutes before unplugging connectors.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the inner sail panel (mirror triangle cover)

  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to gently pry off the small triangular trim piece at the front top of the door by the mirror.
  • Work slowly; clips snap easily.

Step 2: Remove the door trim panel screws

  • Use a small flat screwdriver or pick tool to pop off any small screw covers in the pull handle/armrest area.
  • Remove the door panel screws using a 7mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.

Step 3: Release the door trim panel clips

  • Slide a trim removal tool set (plastic) along the lower/side edges of the panel and pop the clips free one at a time.
  • Once the clips are loose, lift the panel straight up to unhook it from the top window channel.

Step 4: Disconnect door electrical connectors

  • Support the panel and unplug connectors (window/lock switch, courtesy light, etc.). Use a pick tool to help release locking tabs if needed.
  • If equipped, disconnect the interior door handle cable by releasing its clip using a small flat screwdriver (a cable is a mechanical wire inside a sheath).
  • Set the door panel somewhere safe.

Step 5: Unplug the mirror electrical connector

  • Locate the mirror wiring connector near the front upper part of the door.
  • Release the lock tab with a pick tool and unplug it.

Step 6: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Hold the mirror on the outside with one hand.
  • Remove the mirror mounting nuts using a 10mm socket, 3" extension for 1/4" ratchet, and 1/4" ratchet.

Step 7: Remove the mirror and transfer parts if required

  • Pull the mirror straight off the door.
  • If your replacement mirror does not include the foam gasket, transfer it from the old mirror (if it’s in good condition).

Step 8: Install the new mirror

  • Position the new mirror on the door and start the nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the nuts evenly using a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb) 20–200 in-lb: Torque to 89 in-lb (10 Nm).

Step 9: Reconnect the mirror connector and test functions

  • Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks.
  • If the battery was disconnected, reconnect it using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn the key ON and test mirror adjust, heat, turn signal, and power-fold (if equipped).

Step 10: Reinstall the door trim panel

  • Reconnect all door electrical connectors and the handle cable using a pick tool as needed.
  • Hang the door panel on the top window channel, then press the clips in around the edges using firm hand pressure.
  • Reinstall the screws using a 7mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Reinstall the sail panel by pressing it in place until the clips snap in.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the mirror sits flush and the gasket seals evenly against the door.
  • Confirm all door functions work: window, locks, speaker, and mirror controls.
  • Take a short drive and listen for wind noise; if present, re-check mirror seating and nut torque.
