šŸ”§ Sierra 1500 - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing the side view mirror on your Sierra 1500 usually means removing the interior door panel, unplugging the mirror wiring, then unbolting the mirror from the door. This is very doable for a first-timer, but take your time with the plastic clips and connectors.

Quick check (so I tailor this perfectly): Which side are you replacing (driver or passenger)? And does your mirror have power-fold and/or a turn-signal/puddle lamp?

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (one side)

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a flat surface and keep the window fully up.
  • āš ļø Support the mirror with one hand when removing the last nut so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
  • āš ļø If you see any yellow connectors/wiring (SRS/airbag), do not probe them; keep them unplugged only if the battery is disconnected.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not strictly required for the mirror, but it’s safer to disconnect the negative terminal if you’re nervous about electrical connectors.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Ratchet
  • 7mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 6-inch extension (3/8" drive)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Small flat screwdriver
  • Pick tool
  • Painter’s tape
  • Magnetic pickup tool

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (correct side; options-matched) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel retainer clips - Qty: 5-10
  • Mirror foam gasket (if not included with mirror) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition off.
  • Use painter’s tape along the door edge/mirror area to protect paint.
  • If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and wait 2 minutes before unplugging door connectors.
  • Lay screws out in order.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the interior ā€œsailā€ trim at the mirror

  • At the top-front of the door (inside), pry off the small triangular trim cover using a plastic trim removal tool.
  • If it has a tweeter speaker, unplug it by pressing the connector tab (use a pick tool if needed).

Step 2: Remove the door panel screws

  • Remove the screw(s) in/behind the interior door handle bezel using a 7mm socket and ratchet.
  • Remove the screw(s) in the armrest/pull handle area using a 7mm socket and ratchet.
  • Check the lower edge of the door panel for additional screws and remove them with a 7mm socket.

Step 3: Release the door panel clips and lift the panel off

  • Start at a lower corner and pop the panel retainers free using a plastic trim removal tool.
  • Once clips are loose, lift the panel straight up to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Use steady force, not jerks.

Step 4: Disconnect electrical connectors and door handle cable

  • Unplug the window/lock switch connectors by pressing the tabs (use a pick tool if tight).
  • If equipped, unplug the courtesy light connector at the bottom of the panel.
  • Disconnect the inside handle cable: use a small flat screwdriver to flip the cable retainer open, then lift the cable end out.
  • Set the door panel somewhere safe (face-up).

Step 5: Unplug the mirror harness

  • Locate the mirror connector near the top-front of the door inner sheet metal.
  • Unplug it by pressing the lock tab; use a pick tool gently if the tab is stubborn.

Step 6: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Hold the mirror on the outside with one hand.
  • Remove the three mirror mounting nuts using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • Use a magnetic pickup tool if a nut wants to drop inside the door.

Step 7: Remove the mirror from the door

  • Feed the mirror wiring and grommet through the door opening and remove the mirror.
  • Clean the mounting surface so the new gasket seals well.

Step 8: Install the new mirror

  • Place the new mirror gasket (if separate), then feed the harness through the opening and set the mirror in place.
  • Start all three nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the nuts evenly using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 10 NĀ·m (89 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (inch-pound).

Step 9: Reconnect wiring and reassemble the door

  • Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks.
  • Reconnect the door handle cable and snap the retainer closed using a small flat screwdriver.
  • Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors.
  • Hang the door panel on the top ledge and press clips back in by hand around the perimeter.
  • Reinstall all door panel screws using a 7mm socket.
  • Reinstall the sail trim by pressing it back into place.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn ignition on and verify mirror movement (up/down/left/right).
  • If equipped, test: power-fold, heated glass, turn signal, puddle/courtesy lamp, and memory positions.
  • Close the door and check for rattles; if you hear one, a trim clip may not be seated.
  • If you disconnected the battery, reset clock/radio settings as needed.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$900 (parts + labor, varies a lot by mirror options)

DIY Cost: $90-$650 (parts only)

You Save: $160-$250+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
