šŸ”§ 1500 - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing a side view mirror on your 1500 means removing the small interior trim panel at the front of the window (the ā€œsail panelā€), unplugging the mirror wiring (if equipped), and unbolting the mirror from the door. A careful install matters so the mirror sits flat, doesn’t whistle in the wind, and doesn’t leak water.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours (per side)

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø If your door has a side airbag, do not probe yellow connectors or wiring.
  • āš ļø Support the mirror with one hand while removing the last fastener so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging door wiring to prevent shorts.
  • āš ļø Use plastic trim tools to avoid cracking interior panels.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Torque wrench (in-lb)
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Pick tool
  • Flashlight
  • Painter’s tape
  • Fender cover
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (LH driver or RH passenger, correct options) - Qty: 1
  • Mirror-to-door foam gasket/seal - Qty: 1
  • Interior trim panel retainers/clips (assorted) - Qty: 1 set

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition off.
  • Lower the window glass on the side you’re working on.
  • Use 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
  • Apply painter’s tape along the door edge under the mirror to protect the paint.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the interior ā€œsail panelā€

  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to pry off the small triangular trim cover at the front upper corner of the door (inside, by the mirror).
  • If there’s a small cap hiding a screw, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the cap, then remove any retainer carefully with a pick tool.
  • Pull straight out to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Disconnect the mirror wiring (if equipped)

  • Look behind the sail panel with a flashlight for the mirror electrical connector.
  • Use a pick tool to gently lift the lock tab (if present), then unplug the connector by hand.
  • If your mirror is manual (no connector), skip this step.

Step 3: Remove the mirror mounting fasteners

  • Support the mirror on the outside with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the three mirror mounting nuts/bolts inside the door.
  • Keep the fasteners in a small pile so they don’t drop into the door.

Step 4: Remove the mirror from the door

  • Carefully pull the mirror away from the door.
  • If it’s a power mirror, feed the wiring and connector through the hole as you remove it.
  • Remove the old foam gasket/seal if it stayed stuck to the door.

Step 5: Prep the mounting surface

  • Wipe the door mounting surface clean by hand (no scraping tools).
  • Install the new mirror-to-door foam gasket/seal onto the mirror (or door) in the same orientation as the original.
  • A flat seal prevents wind noise and leaks.

Step 6: Install the new mirror

  • Hold the mirror in place and feed the wiring through the door opening (if equipped).
  • Hand-start all fasteners to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to snug them evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench (in-lb) and tighten evenly: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb).

Step 7: Reconnect wiring and reinstall the sail panel

  • Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks (if equipped).
  • Align the sail panel clips and press it straight into place by hand.
  • If you removed any clip caps, reinstall them by hand (use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed).

Step 8: Reconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.

āœ… After Repair

  • Check mirror fit: confirm it sits flush and the gasket is not pinched.
  • Power mirror test (if equipped): ignition on, verify left/right selection and up/down movement.
  • If your mirror has heat or turn signal (if equipped), verify operation.
  • Road test: listen for wind noise around the mirror at 30-50 mph.
