🔧 Patriot - Side View Mirror Replacement
You’ll remove the inside door trim, unplug the mirror wiring, unbolt the mirror, then install the new mirror and test it. This is a straightforward job, but you need to be careful with plastic clips and paint around the mirror base.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (one side)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground, key OFF, and keep the window fully down for easier access.
- ⚠️ Protect the paint: place masking tape around the mirror base area on the outside of the door.
- ⚠️ Recommended: disconnect the negative battery cable to avoid accidental shorting or warning lights while unplugging door electronics.
- ⚠️ Support the mirror with your hand when removing the last nut so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🧰 Lower the window fully and turn the ignition OFF.
- 🧰 If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
- 🧰 Lay a fender cover over the door sill area to prevent scratches.
- 🧰 Put masking tape (1" wide) around the outside mirror base area to protect paint.
- 🧰 A “trim removal tool” is a plastic pry tool used to pop panels/clips without gouging them.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the inside mirror sail panel
- Use a trim removal tool set (specialty) to gently pry off the small triangular trim panel at the top-front of the door (inside corner by the mirror).
- Work slowly and pop the clips straight out. Pry close to each clip.
Step 2: Remove the door handle/armrest screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the visible screws in the interior door pull/armrest area.
- If a small cap covers a screw, use the trim removal tool set (specialty) to lift the cap first, then remove the screw with the Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Step 3: Release the door panel clips
- Starting at the lower edge of the door panel, use the trim removal tool set (specialty) to pop the plastic push-clips free.
- Work around the sides and bottom until the panel is loose. You’ll hear clips “snap” free.
Step 4: Lift the door panel up and disconnect wiring
- Lift the door panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Unplug electrical connectors (window/lock/mirror switch) by pressing the tab and pulling apart by hand. Use needle-nose pliers only if needed, and pull on the connector body (not the wires).
- If equipped with a mechanical door-handle cable, unclip it and swing the cable end out of the handle lever.
Step 5: Unplug the mirror connector
- Behind the sail panel area, locate the mirror wiring connector.
- Press the lock tab and disconnect it by hand.
Step 6: Remove the mirror mounting nuts
- Hold the mirror housing from the outside with one hand.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension for 1/4" drive to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
- Set the nuts aside if the new mirror does not include replacements.
Step 7: Remove the old mirror and transfer parts if needed
- Carefully pull the mirror away from the door and guide the wiring through the opening.
- If the new mirror does not include a foam seal/gasket, transfer the old one (replace it if torn or flattened).
Step 8: Install the new mirror
- Feed the mirror wiring through the door opening and seat the mirror against the door.
- Thread the mounting nuts on by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to snug the nuts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench (inch-pound) 20-200 in-lb to finish tightening: Torque to 9 N·m (80 in-lb).
Step 9: Reconnect mirror wiring and reassemble the door
- Reconnect the mirror connector by hand until it clicks.
- Reconnect the door panel electrical connectors and the door-handle cable (if equipped).
- Hang the door panel on the top window ledge, then press down to seat it.
- Press the panel clips back in using firm hand pressure around the perimeter.
- Reinstall screws using the Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Reinstall the sail panel by aligning clips and pressing it into place by hand.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn the key ON and test mirror movement on all directions using the mirror switch.
- ✅ If equipped, test heated mirrors by turning on the rear defrost and feeling for warming after a few minutes.
- ✅ Check the mirror for wobble and verify the gasket seals evenly all around.
- ✅ Take a short drive and listen for wind noise; reseat the mirror if needed.
