🔧 Accent - Side View Mirror Replacement

You’ll remove the inner door trim, unplug the mirror wiring, and unbolt the mirror from the door. This is a straightforward job, but the door panel clips and the moisture barrier (plastic sheet) need careful handling to prevent rattles and water leaks.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (first time, one side)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before unplugging any connectors.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses; door clips can pop loose suddenly.
  • ⚠️ Use a trim tool (plastic pry tool) to avoid scratching painted and soft interior parts.
  • ⚠️ Support the mirror with one hand when removing the last nut so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended if your mirror has heated glass/turn signal wiring: disconnect negative terminal first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Trim removal tool set (plastic pry tools)
  • Panel clip pliers
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range ft-lb)
  • Pick tool
  • Painters tape
  • Magnetic parts tray
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (left or right, paint-to-match or primed) - Qty: 1
  • Door panel trim clips - Qty: 6-12 (as needed)
  • Butyl tape (moisture barrier adhesive) - Qty: 1 (as needed)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, engine off, and open the door fully.
  • Lower the window fully so you can hold the door panel safely and access edges easier.
  • Apply painters tape along the door edge near the mirror to protect paint.
  • If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative terminal and keep it from springing back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the inner sail panel (mirror triangle trim)

  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic pry tools) to pry off the small triangular trim at the top front of the door (inside, by the mirror).
  • If it feels stuck, work around the edges slowly to release the clips. Slow prying prevents broken clips.

Step 2: Remove door handle/armrest screws

  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to lift any small screw covers in the door pull/handle area.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the exposed screws (put them in a magnetic parts tray).

Step 3: Pop the door panel clips loose

  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic pry tools) to start at the bottom corner of the door panel.
  • Work around the perimeter, releasing clips one-by-one. If a clip is stubborn, use panel clip pliers to pull near the clip location.

Step 4: Lift the door panel upward and disconnect wiring

  • Lift the door panel straight up to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Support the panel and use a pick tool to help release electrical connector locks (small tabs you press to unplug).
  • Unplug the window switch connector(s). If equipped, unplug courtesy light speaker connectors.

Step 5: Peel back the moisture barrier

  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic pry tools) to gently peel the plastic moisture barrier back only as much as needed to reach the mirror area.
  • If the adhesive is messy, use butyl tape later to reseal it. A good seal prevents water leaks.

Step 6: Unplug the mirror connector

  • Locate the mirror wiring connector near the top front of the door.
  • Use a pick tool to help press the lock tab, then unplug it by hand (don’t pull on wires).

Step 7: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Hold the mirror on the outside with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" socket extension to remove the three mounting nuts inside the door.
  • Remove the mirror outward and feed the wiring through the opening.

Step 8: Install the new mirror

  • Feed the mirror wiring through the door opening and place the mirror onto the mounting studs.
  • Start all three nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket to snug the nuts evenly.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 7–9 Nm (62–80 in-lbs).
  • Assumption: Torque spec is typical for this Accent mirror stud size; snug + small torque is key.

Step 9: Reconnect and quick-test before reassembly

  • Plug the mirror connector back in by hand until it clicks.
  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect negative using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn ignition ON and test mirror adjustments. If equipped, test heater and turn signal.
  • Turn ignition OFF again before reassembling trim.

Step 10: Reinstall moisture barrier, door panel, and sail panel

  • Press the moisture barrier back into place; add butyl tape anywhere it won’t stick.
  • Reconnect door panel electrical connectors by hand.
  • Hang the door panel on the window ledge and press down to seat it.
  • Press around the perimeter to snap all clips back in.
  • Reinstall screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and reinstall covers using a small flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Snap the sail panel back on using hand pressure.

✅ After Repair

  • Test mirror movement in all directions and confirm it doesn’t wobble.
  • Close the door and check for wind noise around the mirror at low speed, then highway speed.
  • Check that the window switch and door lock functions work normally.
  • If you replaced one side, repeat the same process for the other side.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$550 (parts + labor, depends on painted/optioned mirror)

DIY Cost: $90-$320 (parts only)

You Save: $160-$230 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
