🔧 Q3 - Side View Mirror Replacement
This job replaces a damaged side mirror on your Q3. You’ll remove the inside door trim, unplug the mirror wiring, unbolt the mirror, and install the new one.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (one side)
Assumption: You’re replacing the full mirror assembly (not just the glass); glass-only steps are included too.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground with ignition OFF and key away from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ If your door has an airbag (common on many vehicles), avoid turning ignition ON while connectors are unplugged to prevent an airbag/SRS warning light.
- ⚠️ Support the mirror with one hand while removing the last bolt so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, keep the tailgate closed and windows down first.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Side view mirror assembly (LH driver or RH passenger, painted cap as needed) - Qty: 1
- Door panel clips - Qty: 5-10
- Mirror glass (optional, if replacing glass only) - Qty: 1
- Mirror cap cover (optional, if damaged) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Use painter’s tape to protect the paint around the mirror base and door edge.
- If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
- Trim tool = plastic pry tool to avoid scratches.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the inner mirror “sail” trim
- Open the door fully for access.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pry off the small triangular trim at the front top corner of the door (inside), near the mirror.
- If there’s a small connector (tweeter speaker) attached, release it with a pick tool and unplug it.
Step 2: Remove the door panel fasteners
- Use a pick tool or small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pop off covers in the door pull/handle area.
- Remove screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver and/or Torx T25 screwdriver (locations vary by door panel).
- Put screws in a magnetic parts tray.
Step 3: Release the door panel clips
- Start at the bottom edge of the door panel.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop the clips free around the perimeter.
- Pop, don’t yank—clips break easily.
Step 4: Lift the door panel off and disconnect wiring
- Lift the whole panel straight upward to unhook it from the window channel.
- Support the panel close to the door and unplug connectors (window switch, courtesy light, etc.).
- If equipped, unhook the inner door handle cable carefully (note its routing for reassembly).
Step 5: Unplug the mirror connector
- Locate the mirror wiring connector near the front upper area of the door.
- Release the lock tab using a pick tool, then unplug the connector.
Step 6: Remove the mirror mounting bolts
- Hold the mirror on the outside with one hand.
- Use a Torx T30 bit socket with a ratchet and extension to remove the mirror mounting bolts (commonly 3 bolts).
- Remove the mirror from the outside and feed the wiring through the opening.
- Torque to 8 Nm (6 ft-lbs) on installation (common Audi mirror fastener torque; verify with service data for your exact mirror hardware).
Step 7: Install the new mirror assembly
- Feed the mirror wiring through the door opening.
- Position the mirror squarely on the door.
- Start all bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
- Tighten with a Torx T30 bit socket, then finish with a torque wrench: Torque to 8 Nm (6 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect mirror wiring and quick-test
- Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks.
- If the battery was disconnected, reconnect it using a 10mm socket.
- Turn ignition ON and test mirror adjustment, heating (if equipped), and turn signal in the mirror (if equipped).
- Turn ignition OFF before reassembly if you still have connectors unplugged elsewhere.
Step 9: Reinstall the door panel
- Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors and the door handle cable.
- Hang the panel on the top lip (window channel) first, then press downward to seat it.
- Press around the edges to snap all clips back in.
- Reinstall screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver / Torx T25 screwdriver.
- Reinstall the sail trim using your hands (press until it clips in).
Step 10 (Optional): Mirror glass-only replacement (if that’s what you meant)
- Tilt the mirror glass fully inward using the mirror switch so you can access the outside edge.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the mirror glass off the motor plate (it snaps on).
- Disconnect heater wires from the back of the glass using a pick tool.
- Reconnect heater wires, align the glass to the motor plate, and press evenly until it snaps in.
- Press near the center, not the edges.
âś… After Repair
- Confirm the mirror sits flush and doesn’t wobble.
- Test: mirror adjust in all directions, mirror heat (if equipped), power fold (if equipped), and mirror turn signal (if equipped).
- Check the door panel: window switch works, door opens from inside and outside, and there are no rattles.
- If an SRS/airbag light comes on, it typically requires a scan tool to clear after the fault is fixed.
