🔧 Tacoma - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing a side view mirror on your Tacoma is mostly an interior trim job: remove the small inside trim cover, unplug the mirror wiring, then remove the mirror’s mounting nuts. This is usually straightforward, but the exact steps vary depending on whether your mirror is manual or power and whether it has a turn-signal or heat.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours (per side)

Quick check (so I can match the steps perfectly): Is your mirror power-adjust or manual? And does it have a turn signal in the mirror?

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground with the truck in Park and the parking brake set.
  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before unplugging any door wiring.
  • ⚠️ Support the mirror with one hand while removing the last nut so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
  • ⚠️ If your Tacoma has power mirrors: disconnecting the battery is recommended to prevent accidental shorting.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Plastic trim removal tool (non-marring)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension (1/4")
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • 10mm wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (correct side for your Tacoma) - Qty: 1
  • Mirror mounting nuts (recommended, if not included) - Qty: 3
  • Interior trim clips (door/sail panel clips, as needed) - Qty: 1-3

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on a flat surface, set the parking brake, and lower the window on the side you’re working on.
  • If your Tacoma has a power mirror: use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal (black cable) and set it aside.
  • Put a towel on the door and A-pillar area to protect paint if the mirror slips.
  • Bag and label screws as you remove them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the inside mirror trim (sail panel)

  • Open the door fully.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool (non-marring) to gently pry off the small triangular trim cover at the top-front of the door (inside, next to the mirror).
  • If it has a clip or tether, use needle-nose pliers carefully as needed to release it without breaking the clip.

Step 2: Disconnect the mirror wiring (power/turn-signal/heated mirrors)

  • If you see an electrical connector behind the sail panel, press the lock tab and unplug it by hand.
  • If the connector is not reachable from the sail panel opening, you may need a little more access:
  • Remove any visible screw near the front upper door trim using a Phillips #2 screwdriver, then gently pull the front edge of the door panel back just enough to reach the connector.
  • Don’t yank—plastic clips can snap.

Step 3: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Hold the mirror on the outside with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension (1/4") to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
  • Keep the nuts—unless your new mirror includes replacements.

Step 4: Remove the old mirror

  • Feed the wiring and connector (if equipped) out through the door opening.
  • Lift the mirror away from the door.
  • Check that the old foam gasket came off with the mirror (it should not stay stuck to the door).

Step 5: Install the new mirror

  • Place the new mirror onto the door and align the studs with the holes.
  • If equipped, feed the wiring connector through the door opening the same way the original was routed.
  • Hand-start the three mounting nuts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to snug the nuts evenly.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench (inch-pound): Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbf)

Step 6: Reconnect wiring and refit trim

  • Reconnect the mirror electrical connector until it clicks (if equipped).
  • Reposition the sail panel and press it into place by hand.
  • If you loosened any door panel screws, reinstall them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

âś… After Repair

  • If you disconnected the battery: reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm wrench.
  • Turn ignition ON and verify mirror functions (if equipped): power adjust, turn signal in mirror, and heat (if equipped).
  • Close the door and confirm the mirror sits flush and doesn’t wobble.
  • Take a short drive and re-check the mirror for vibration.
