🔧 Lancer - Side View Mirror Replacement

You’ll remove the interior door trim, unplug the mirror wiring (if equipped), then unbolt the mirror from the door and swap the new one in. The key is protecting the paint and not breaking the plastic clips on the door panel.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (per side)

Assumption: your mirror is power-adjust with an electrical connector (most GT).


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal before door trim work (reduces risk around door wiring and any side airbag circuits).
  • ⚠️ Support the door panel as you unplug connectors so you don’t pull on the wiring.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses—plastic clips can pop loose suddenly.
  • ⚠️ Protect painted surfaces with masking tape along the mirror base/door edge.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, turn ignition off, and open the window on the side you’re working on.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the battery negative terminal, then wait 2 minutes.
  • Apply masking tape along the mirror base area to protect the paint.
  • Have a small container ready for screws and clips.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the interior sail panel (mirror triangle cover)

  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to pry off the small triangular cover at the top front of the door (inside, by the mirror).
  • If it has a tweeter speaker, unplug it using a pick tool to lift the lock tab gently.

Step 2: Remove the door switch panel

  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to lift the window/lock switch panel from the armrest.
  • Unplug the connectors by pressing the release tab with a pick tool.

Step 3: Remove door panel screws

  • Remove the screw(s) behind the interior door handle trim using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Remove the screw(s) in the armrest/pull handle pocket using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Tip: Keep screws grouped by location.

Step 4: Release the door panel clips and lift the panel off

  • Start at the lower edge and use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to pop the panel clips free.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use panel clip removal pliers to pull straight out (this helps prevent clip breakage).
  • Lift the whole door panel straight up to unhook it from the window ledge.

Step 5: Disconnect remaining connectors and the door handle cable

  • Support the panel with your knee or a box and unplug any remaining connectors using a pick tool.
  • Remove the inside handle cable: use a needle-nose pliers to rotate the cable end out of its slot, then lift the cable housing out of its bracket.
  • Set the door panel aside on a clean blanket.

Step 6: Peel back the vapor barrier (water shield)

  • Use your hands (and a trim removal tool set (plastic) if needed) to peel the plastic vapor barrier back near the mirror area.
  • Go slowly so the sticky butyl stays on the door as much as possible.

Step 7: Unplug the mirror connector

  • Find the mirror wiring connector near the mirror mount area inside the door.
  • Press the release tab and unplug it using a pick tool.
  • If equipped, you may have extra circuits for heat/turn signal—unplug all connectors in that mirror harness.

Step 8: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Hold the mirror from the outside with one hand so it doesn’t fall.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the three mounting nuts.
  • Remove the mirror and feed the wiring through the door opening.

Step 9: Install the new mirror

  • Feed the mirror wiring through the door and position the mirror on the studs.
  • Hand-start all three nuts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (in-lb) with a 10mm socket to tighten the mirror nuts: Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lb).
  • Tip: Tighten evenly to seat the gasket.

Step 10: Reconnect wiring and reseal the vapor barrier

  • Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks.
  • Press the vapor barrier back into the butyl adhesive.
  • If the butyl is damaged, apply butyl adhesive strip to reseal the edges.

Step 11: Reinstall the door panel

  • Reconnect the door handle cable and all electrical connectors.
  • Hang the door panel on the upper window ledge, then press around the perimeter to snap the clips in.
  • Reinstall the screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the switch panel and sail panel using a trim removal tool set (plastic).

Step 12: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Test mirror functions: power adjust (all directions), mirror fold (if equipped), heat (if equipped), and turn signal (if equipped).
  • Close the door and verify the mirror sits flush and doesn’t vibrate.
  • Check the window operation and door lock switch operation.
  • After the first rain or car wash, check for water leaks inside the door (reseal vapor barrier if needed).
