🔧 CX-5 - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing the side mirror on your CX-5 is mostly an interior door-panel job: you remove the small trim at the mirror corner, unplug the mirror (if equipped), remove the mounting nuts, then swap the mirror and reassemble.

The exact steps and connector handling depend on whether your mirror is manual or powered, and whether it has options like heat/turn signal/Blind Spot Monitoring.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours (per side)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛡️ Wear safety glasses; trim clips can pop loose suddenly.
  • 🧤 Use cut-resistant gloves; the inner door metal edges can be sharp.
  • ⚡ If your mirror has wiring (power/heat/turn signal/BSM), turn ignition OFF and disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging connectors.
  • 🧠 If equipped with side airbag in the door, avoid probing yellow airbag connectors; don’t turn ignition ON with airbag connectors unplugged.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Torque wrench (in-lb range)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Plastic pry tool set
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Painter’s tape (1" wide)
  • Magnetic pickup tool
  • Shop light
  • Safety glasses
  • Cut-resistant gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (LH or RH, correct options) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel clips (Mazda-style) - Qty: 6-12
  • Mirror mounting nuts (if damaged/corroded) - Qty: 3
  • Foam mirror gasket/seal (if not included with mirror) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧭 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open the window on the side you’re working on.
  • 🧷 Put painter’s tape along the door edge near the mirror to protect paint.
  • 🔌 If the mirror is powered/heated/has signal/BSM: disconnect the battery using a 10mm socket (negative cable first).
  • âť“ Quick check (answer these 2 and I’ll tailor the exact connector/trim steps and the correct torque spec):
    • Is your mirror manual-adjust (little lever) or power-adjust (joystick switch)?
    • Does the mirror have any of these: heated glass, turn signal in the mirror, or Blind Spot Monitoring icon/light?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the interior mirror sail panel

  • Use a plastic pry tool to carefully pry off the small triangular trim piece at the front top corner of the door (inside, by the mirror).
  • Pull straight out to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Access the mirror fasteners and connector

  • Use a shop light to locate the mirror mounting area behind the sail panel.
  • If equipped, locate the mirror wiring connector.

Step 3: Disconnect the mirror wiring (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip removal tool or needle-nose pliers to free any harness retainers from the door sheet metal.
  • Press the connector lock tab and unplug the mirror connector by hand.

Step 4: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Support the mirror from the outside with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the three mounting nuts.
  • Use a magnetic pickup tool if a nut tries to drop into the door.

Step 5: Remove the mirror

  • Lift the mirror straight away from the door.
  • Peel off the old foam gasket if it stayed on the door; clean the surface by hand.

Step 6: Install the new mirror

  • Position the new mirror and make sure the foam gasket seats evenly all the way around.
  • Start the mounting nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (in-lb range) to tighten the nuts evenly in a criss-cross pattern: Torque to OEM spec for your exact mirror option.
  • Snug each nut first, then torque.

Step 7: Reconnect wiring and reassemble trim

  • Plug the connector back in until it clicks.
  • Reinstall any harness retainers using needle-nose pliers (press-in type) or by hand.
  • Reinstall the sail panel by aligning the clips and pressing firmly by hand.

Step 8: Restore power (if disconnected)

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔍 Check mirror fitment: confirm it sits flush and the gasket seals evenly.
  • 🧪 If powered: test mirror movement in all directions.
  • 🌡️ If heated: verify heat function (may take a few minutes).
  • đź’ˇ If turn signal/BSM equipped: verify the mirror indicator works and no warning lights appear.
  • đźšż Lightly spray water at the mirror base and check for leaks inside the door.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$650 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $80-$450 (parts only)

You Save: $170-$200+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.8-1.2 hours.
