How to Replace the Side View Mirror on a 2014 Kia Optima (Driver or Passenger)
Step-by-step removal and installation with tools, parts list, wiring tips, and 71 in-lb (8 Nm) torque spec

🔧 Optima - Side View Mirror Replacement
Replacing the side view mirror on your Optima is mostly a remove-and-reinstall job: you’ll unplug the mirror wiring, remove the mounting nuts, and swap the mirror assembly. The biggest “gotcha” is safely removing interior trim without breaking clips.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (one side)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before unplugging mirror wiring.
- 🧤 Wear gloves—door sheet metal edges can be sharp.
- 🧠If equipped with side airbag in the door, don’t probe yellow connectors.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is recommended if you’ll remove the door panel and your Optima has door airbags: disconnect negative terminal and wait 3 minutes.
- 🪛 Use plastic trim tools—metal screwdrivers easily crack trim.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Side view mirror assembly (LH driver or RH passenger, matched to features) - Qty: 1
- Door panel trim clips (assorted) - Qty: 1 set
- Mirror mounting nuts (if damaged/corroded) - Qty: 3
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Apply painter’s tape along the door edge near the mirror to protect paint.
- If you will remove the door panel: use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal, then wait 3 minutes.
- Know your mirror options (heated/turn-signal/puddle lamp/memory). The replacement mirror must match your Optima’s features and connector.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the interior “sail panel” trim
- The sail panel is the small triangular trim piece at the top-front corner of the door, inside the cabin.
- Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to gently pry the sail panel outward and remove it.
- If there’s a small tweeter speaker in the sail panel, unplug it by pressing the lock tab using a pick tool.
Step 2: Access the mirror electrical connector
- Look behind the sail panel opening for the mirror connector.
- If you can reach it: unplug the mirror harness by pressing the lock tab using a pick tool.
- If you cannot reach it, continue to Step 3 to loosen/remove the door panel for access.
Step 3: Remove (or loosen) the front of the door panel if needed
- Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to pop off the small trim cover behind the interior door handle (if equipped), then remove the screw with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Use the trim removal tool set (plastic) to lift the window switch panel, then unplug connectors (press tabs using a pick tool).
- Remove any visible door panel screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Start at the lower edge and pop the door panel clips free using a trim removal tool set (plastic). Pull straight out; don’t twist.
- Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window channel, then support it so wiring isn’t strained.
Step 4: Unplug the mirror harness (if not already)
- Use a flashlight to locate the mirror connector inside the door.
- Unplug it by pressing the lock tab using a pick tool.
- If the harness is held by clips, release them using needle-nose pliers carefully.
Step 5: Remove the mirror mounting nuts
- Support the mirror with one hand from outside so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
- Carefully pull the mirror away from the door and feed the wiring through the opening.
Step 6: Install the new mirror
- Feed the new mirror harness through the door opening and place the mirror onto the mounting studs.
- Thread the nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then final-tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb) 20–200 in-lb: Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb).
Step 7: Reconnect wiring and reassemble trim
- Plug the mirror connector back in (you should feel a click). Use a flashlight to confirm it’s fully seated.
- If you removed the door panel, hang it on the window channel and press clips in place firmly around the perimeter.
- Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Reconnect the window switch panel connectors, then snap the panel back in using a trim removal tool set (plastic).
- Snap the sail panel back into place using your hands; if equipped, reconnect the tweeter first.
Step 8: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)
- Use a 10mm wrench to reconnect the negative battery terminal securely.
âś… After Repair
- Turn ignition ON and test mirror adjustment in all directions.
- If equipped, test heating, turn signal repeater, puddle light, and power-fold (if applicable).
- Check mirror fitment: no gaps at the base, no wind noise on a short drive.
- If the door panel rattles, a clip may be mis-seated—press around the edges again.
