🔧 Altima - Side View Mirror Replacement

On your Altima, the side view mirror is bolted to the door from the inside, behind the small interior trim “sail panel” near the front of the window. Most replacements require removing that trim and usually the door panel to unplug the mirror wiring.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.8 hours (one side)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 If your Altima has side airbags in the door, avoid turning the key on with connectors unplugged.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves—door panel edges and inner door metal can be sharp.
  • 🔌 If you’ll remove the door panel and disconnect multiple connectors, disconnect the negative battery cable first.
  • 🪟 Support the mirror as the last nut comes off so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or low-range ft-lb)
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Trim removal tool set (specialty)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Painter’s tape
  • Clean shop rags
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (LH driver or RH passenger, correct options) - Qty: 1
  • Door panel clips (assortment) - Qty: 1
  • Butyl tape (vapor barrier reseal) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, window fully up, and key off.
  • Apply painter’s tape along the door edge near the mirror to protect paint.
  • If you’ll remove the full door panel, disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Please confirm these two details so I give you the exact connector/trim steps: (1) Which side are you replacing (driver or passenger)? (2) Does your mirror have heating and/or a turn-signal/puddle light in the mirror?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the mirror type and prep the door

  • Confirm whether you’re replacing the driver (LH) or passenger (RH) mirror, and whether it has heat and/or a mirror lamp (turn signal/puddle).
  • Use painter’s tape to protect the paint around the mirror base.
  • If you plan to remove the door panel, disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

Step 2: Remove the interior sail panel (mirror triangle trim)

  • Use a trim removal tool set (specialty) to gently pry off the small triangular trim at the front upper corner of the door (inside).
  • If it has a tweeter speaker, unplug it carefully by pressing the connector tab and pulling straight out.

Step 3: Decide if you must remove the full door panel

  • If you can reach the mirror electrical connector and the three mirror nuts through the sail-panel opening, you may not need to remove the full door panel.
  • If the connector is routed lower (common), remove the door panel in Steps 4–6 so you can unplug the mirror harness safely.

Step 4: Remove door panel fasteners

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 to remove the screw(s) in the inside door pull/handle area (locations vary by door trim).
  • Use a trim removal tool set (specialty) to pop off any small covers hiding screws, then remove them with the Phillips screwdriver #2.

Step 5: Release the door panel clips

  • Use a trim removal tool set (specialty) to work around the panel edge and pop the plastic clips free.
  • Pull straight out to avoid breaking clips.

Step 6: Lift off the door panel and disconnect wiring

  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect electrical connectors by pressing the tab and pulling straight out (use needle-nose pliers only if needed, gently).
  • If equipped, unclip the door handle cable(s) carefully; note routing for reassembly.
  • Peel back the vapor barrier enough to access the mirror harness grommet (use clean shop rags to keep adhesive clean).

Step 7: Unplug the mirror and free the harness

  • Locate the mirror connector inside the door and unplug it.
  • Release any harness clips using a trim removal tool set (specialty) so the mirror wiring can pass out with the mirror.

Step 8: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Support the mirror from the outside with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension (1/4" drive), and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the three mounting nuts.
  • Remove the mirror outward and feed the harness through the door opening.

Step 9: Install the new mirror

  • Feed the new mirror harness through the door and set the mirror onto the studs.
  • Start all three nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (in-lb or low-range ft-lb) to tighten the mirror nuts to Torque to Nissan specification (I’ll provide the exact number once you confirm mirror options).

Step 10: Reconnect wiring and reassemble

  • Route the harness exactly like the original and snap any clips back in place using the trim removal tool set (specialty).
  • Reconnect the mirror connector (and tweeter connector if equipped).
  • Reseal the vapor barrier using butyl tape if the original adhesive no longer sticks well.
  • Reinstall the door panel: hang it on the top edge first, then press clips in around the perimeter.
  • Reinstall screws with the Phillips screwdriver #2 and snap covers back on.
  • Snap the sail panel back in place.

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the battery (if disconnected) using a 10mm socket.
  • Key ON and test: mirror adjust (up/down/left/right), mirror fold (if equipped), mirror heat (if equipped), and mirror lamp/turn signal (if equipped).
  • Confirm the mirror sits flush and doesn’t whistle at highway speed.
