šŸ”§ Camry - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing a side view mirror usually means removing the inner door trim, unplugging the mirror wiring, and swapping the mirror assembly. This is common after mirror glass breaks, the housing cracks, or the power adjustment stops working.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (per side)

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Disconnect the 12V battery negative cable before removing the door panel (side airbag wiring is in the door).
  • āš ļø Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the 12V battery before unplugging any door connectors.
  • āš ļø Support the door panel as you lift it off so you don’t tear wiring or the door-handle cable.
  • āš ļø Use trim tools (not a screwdriver) to avoid breaking clips and scratching paint.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 1/4" drive extension (3"-6")
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Trim removal tool set
  • Pick tool
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range Nm)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Painter’s tape
  • Fender cover
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (left or right, correct options) - Qty: 1
  • Door panel clips - Qty: 6-12 (as needed)
  • Foam mirror gasket/seal - Qty: 1 (if not included)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the car OFF.
  • Lower the window on the side you’re working on (helps if the panel needs repositioning).
  • Protect the paint at the mirror area with painter’s tape.
  • Disconnect the 12V battery negative cable using a 10mm socket, then wait 90 seconds.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the inner trim pieces

  • Use a trim removal tool set to pop off the small trim cover behind the interior door handle.
  • Use a pick tool to lift any small screw covers in the armrest area (if equipped), then remove screws with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Pop off the triangular ā€œsail panelā€ trim at the front upper corner of the door (inside, near the mirror) using a trim removal tool set.

Step 2: Remove the door panel (door trim)

  • Use a trim removal tool set to release the door panel clips around the edges (work from bottom to sides).
  • Lift the door panel straight up to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Support the panel and unplug electrical connectors (window switch, courtesy light) by pressing the lock tab with a pick tool.
  • If your door has a handle cable: unclip it carefully using needle-nose pliers. (A cable is a metal wire inside a sheath that mechanically operates the handle.)

Step 3: Unplug the mirror connector

  • Locate the mirror wiring connector near the mirror mounting area inside the door.
  • Press the connector lock tab with a pick tool and unplug it.

Step 4: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Hold the mirror from the outside with one hand so it doesn’t fall.
  • Remove the mirror mounting nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and extension.
  • Remove the mirror assembly and gasket from the door.

Step 5: Install the new mirror

  • Clean the mounting surface. Install the mirror gasket/seal (replace if torn).
  • Set the new mirror in place and start all nuts by hand.
  • Tighten the nuts evenly using a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten using a torque wrench: Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
  • Snug evenly to avoid cracking the mirror base.

Step 6: Reconnect wiring and quick test

  • Plug the mirror connector back in (listen/feel for the click).
  • Reconnect the 12V battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn the car ON and test mirror adjustment (and heat/turn signal if equipped).
  • Turn the car OFF again and disconnect the 12V battery negative cable before reassembling the door panel.

Step 7: Reinstall the door panel

  • Reconnect all door electrical connectors and the door-handle cable (if equipped).
  • Hang the door panel on the top ledge first, then press the clips in around the edges with your hands.
  • Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Reinstall the sail panel trim and handle trim using a trim removal tool set.

Step 8: Final battery reconnect and function check

  • Reconnect the 12V battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Test: mirror movement, window switch, door locks, and any courtesy lights.

āœ… After Repair

  • Confirm the mirror sits flush to the door and the gasket seals evenly (no gaps).
  • Road-test and listen for wind noise; re-seat the sail panel/door panel if needed.
  • If the window auto-up/down loses function after battery disconnect, initialize it by holding the switch fully down, then fully up for a few seconds.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$700 (parts + labor, varies by options/paint)

DIY Cost: $90-$450 (parts only)

You Save: $160-$250+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
