🔧 Grand Cherokee - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing the side mirror on your Grand Cherokee is mostly a trim-panel removal job: you remove the inside door panel, unplug the mirror wiring, then unbolt the mirror from the door. The only “gotcha” is making sure the replacement mirror matches your options (heat, memory, turn signal puddle light, etc.) so the connector and features work.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (one side)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative terminal before unplugging door wiring to prevent accidental airbag/SRS faults and electrical shorts.
  • ⚠️ Support the door panel as you lift it off—don’t let it hang by wiring.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key out of the ignition while connectors are unplugged.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses—door clips can pop loose suddenly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Trim removal tool set
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension (1/4" drive)
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Pick tool
  • Battery terminal wrench 10mm
  • Painter’s tape
  • Torque wrench (in-lb, 20–200 in-lb range)
  • Magnetic pickup tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (correct side and options) - Qty: 1
  • Mirror foam/gasket (if not included with mirror) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel clips (push-in retainers) - Qty: 4-10 (as needed)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the door fully.
  • Use painter’s tape along the door edge/paint near the mirror to prevent scratches.
  • Lower the window (helps you handle the door panel easier).
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm battery terminal wrench to remove the negative cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the inside mirror “sail” cover

  • At the top-front corner of the door (inside), pry off the small triangular cover using a trim removal tool.
  • Start at the top edge; pull gently.

Step 2: Remove door panel screws

  • Remove visible screws in/near the door pull/handle area using a Phillips screwdriver #2 and/or Torx T20 screwdriver (screw type varies by handle location).
  • If there’s a small cap hiding a screw, pop the cap with a small flat-blade screwdriver and then remove the screw.

Step 3: Release the door panel clips

  • Slide a trim removal tool under the bottom/side edge of the door panel and pop the clips free one-by-one.
  • If a clip stays in the door metal, remove it with a pick tool and reinstall it onto the panel for reassembly.

Step 4: Lift the door panel up and disconnect wiring

  • Lift the panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Unplug electrical connectors (window switch, lock switch, courtesy light) by pressing the lock tab using a pick tool or small flat-blade screwdriver.
  • If equipped, disconnect the door handle cable/rod carefully. (A “cable retainer” is the little clip that locks the cable housing in place—flip it open first, then lift the cable end out.)

Step 5: Unplug the mirror connector

  • Locate the mirror wiring connector near the front-upper area of the door.
  • Press the connector lock and unplug it using a pick tool (don’t pull on the wires).

Step 6: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Support the mirror with one hand outside the door.
  • Remove the mirror mounting nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Use a magnetic pickup tool to avoid dropping nuts inside the door.

Step 7: Remove the mirror from the door

  • Pull the mirror away from the door while feeding the wiring and connector through the hole.
  • Remove the old foam/gasket if it stayed stuck to the door.

Step 8: Install the new mirror

  • Set the new mirror in place with the gasket aligned and feed the wiring through the door.
  • Start the mounting nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the nuts evenly using a 10mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb).

Step 9: Reconnect mirror wiring and reassemble the door

  • Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks.
  • Reconnect all door panel connectors and the handle cable/rod.
  • Hang the door panel on the top lip first, then press clips in around the edges using your palm.
  • Reinstall door screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2 and/or Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Snap the sail cover back on.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm battery terminal wrench.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the key on and test mirror movement in all directions.
  • If equipped, test: mirror heat (rear defrost on), turn signal on mirror, puddle light, memory function.
  • Make sure the window/lock switches work and the door handle opens from inside and outside.
  • If a clip rattles, remove that section and replace the damaged door clip.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$650 (parts + labor, depends on mirror options/paint)

DIY Cost: $90-$450 (parts only, depends on mirror options/paint)

You Save: $160-$200+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
