How to Replace the Side View Mirror (Glass or Assembly) on a 2019 Nissan Altima
Step-by-step DIY instructions with tools, parts list, door panel removal, wiring, and 65 in-lb torque spec

🔧 Altima - Side View Mirror Replacement
On your Altima, you can replace either the mirror glass only (if it’s cracked) or the entire mirror assembly (if the housing is broken, it won’t fold, or the motor/turn signal/BSW isn’t working). The steps are different, so I’ll cover both paths.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours (glass: ~30 min / assembly: ~1-1.5 hr)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ If removing the door panel, disconnect the negative battery terminal to reduce SRS/airbag risk, then wait 3 minutes before touching door wiring.
- ⚠️ Wear cut-resistant gloves if the mirror glass is shattered.
- ⚠️ Support the mirror with your hand when removing the last mounting nut so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
- ⚠️ Do not pry on painted surfaces without a plastic trim tool to avoid damage.

- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4" drive)
- Torque wrench (in-lb)
- Phillips #2 screwdriver

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Side view mirror glass - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and turn the ignition OFF.
- Lower the window on the mirror’s door (gives you a safe grip point).
- If doing the mirror assembly (door panel removal): use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal, then wait 3 minutes.
- Apply painters tape along the door edge and mirror base area to help prevent accidental scratches.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which replacement you’re doing (glass vs assembly)
- If only the reflective glass is broken but the housing is fine, follow Path A.
- If the housing is damaged, mirror is loose, power adjust/fold/turn signal/BSW is faulty, follow Path B.
Step 2 (Path A): Remove the mirror glass
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pry at the edge of the mirror glass and pop it off the motor plate.
- If equipped with heated mirrors, pull the two heater connectors off the back of the glass using needle-nose pliers (pull on the connector, not the wire).
- Move slowly—glass clips can snap.
Step 3 (Path A): Install the new mirror glass
- Reconnect the heater terminals (if equipped).
- Align the new glass to the motor plate and press evenly with your palm until it clicks in.
- Cycle mirror adjustment using the mirror switch to confirm smooth movement.
Step 4 (Path B): Remove the inside sail panel (mirror trim)
- At the front top of the door (inside), use a plastic trim removal tool to pry off the triangular sail panel.
- If there’s a small clip tether, release it using a small flat trim pick.
Step 5 (Path B): Remove the door trim panel
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove any visible screws in the armrest/pull handle area.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop the door panel clips free around the perimeter.
- Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Disconnect electrical connectors (window switch, courtesy light) by releasing the locks with a small flat trim pick.
Step 6 (Path B): Peel back the vapor barrier (if needed)
- If the mirror connector is behind the vapor barrier, peel it back carefully by hand.
- If the adhesive won’t stick again, plan to reseal with butyl tape.
Step 7 (Path B): Disconnect the mirror wiring
- Find the mirror harness connector near the mirror mounting area.
- Release the tab using a small flat trim pick, then unplug it.
- Free the harness from any retainers using needle-nose pliers (don’t break the clips).
Step 8 (Path B): Remove the mirror assembly
- Support the mirror from outside with one hand.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the 3 mirror mounting nuts.
- Remove the mirror from the door and feed the harness through the opening.
Step 9 (Path B): Install the new mirror assembly
- Feed the new mirror harness through the door opening and seat the mirror onto the studs.
- Thread the nuts on by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
- Use a torque wrench (in-lb) with a 10mm socket to tighten the mirror nuts: Torque to 65 in-lb (7.3 N·m).
Step 10 (Path B): Reconnect wiring and reassemble the door
- Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks.
- Reattach the vapor barrier; add butyl tape as needed for a full seal.
- Reconnect door panel connectors (use a small flat trim pick to confirm locks are seated).
- Hang the door panel on the window ledge, then press clips in firmly by hand.
- Reinstall screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver until snug (do not overtighten plastic).
- Snap the sail panel back on using hand pressure.
Step 11 (Path B): Reconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery terminal.
âś… After Repair
- Turn ignition ON and test mirror adjust (all directions).
- If equipped, test mirror heater, turn signal in mirror, and BSW indicator behavior.
- Check the mirror sits flush and doesn’t wobble when you gently shake it.
- If you removed the vapor barrier, confirm it’s fully sealed to prevent water leaks and wind noise.
- If your Altima has a side camera (Around View Monitor), the system may require calibration if the camera/mirror assembly was replaced.
