🔧 Outlander - Side View Mirror Replacement
Replacing a side view mirror on your Outlander usually means swapping the complete mirror assembly (the whole unit bolted to the door). The job involves removing the inner door trim, unplugging the mirror wiring, and unbolting the mirror from inside the door.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (one side)
Assumption: replacing complete mirror assembly (not just glass).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Door panels can contain side-impact airbag wiring—disconnect the battery before unplugging connectors.
- ⚠️ Support the mirror with one hand when removing the last nut so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
- ⚠️ Use plastic trim tools to avoid cracking panels or scratching paint.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended: remove negative terminal and wait 2 minutes before working near wiring.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Side view mirror assembly (Left/Driver or Right/Passenger, matched to options) - Qty: 1
- Door panel trim clips - Qty: 5-10
- Foam/sealing gasket for mirror base (if not included) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, turn ignition OFF, and open the window on the side you’re working on.
- Use painter’s tape to protect the paint around the mirror base and door edge.
- Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and wait 2 minutes.
- Keep screws in a small tray so nothing gets lost inside the door.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the inner sail panel (mirror triangle trim)
- At the top-front corner of the door, pry the small triangular trim panel off using a plastic trim removal tool set.
- If it has a clip tether or tweeter connector, disconnect it carefully using needle-nose pliers as needed.
- Pull straight out to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the interior door panel
- Remove any visible screws in the armrest/handle area using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- If there’s a small cover hiding a screw, pop the cover using a small flat-blade screwdriver, then remove the screw with the Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Work around the lower edges of the door panel and pop the clips free using the plastic trim removal tool set or panel clip pliers.
- Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Disconnect electrical connectors (window switch, courtesy light) by pressing the tab and pulling straight out.
- If equipped with a door-handle cable, unhook it gently (the cable end sits in a lever; rotate the lever and lift the cable out). A “cable” is a metal wire inside a plastic sleeve.
Step 3: Unplug the mirror connector
- Locate the mirror wiring connector near the mirror mounting area inside the door.
- Press the locking tab and unplug it by hand; use needle-nose pliers only if needed (don’t crush the connector).
- Peel back the vapor barrier (plastic sheet) just enough to access the mirror nuts; use a plastic trim removal tool set to avoid tearing it.
Step 4: Remove the mirror mounting nuts
- Support the mirror from the outside with one hand.
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
- If a nut drops, retrieve it with a magnetic pickup tool.
Step 5: Remove the old mirror assembly
- From outside the door, pull the mirror straight away from the door while feeding the wiring through the opening.
- Remove any old gasket material stuck to the door. Use a plastic trim removal tool set (not metal) to avoid paint damage.
Step 6: Install the new mirror assembly
- Place the new mirror onto the door and feed the wiring through the hole.
- Start all three nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the nuts evenly using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Final tighten with a torque wrench (5–30 Nm range): Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
- Snug first, then torque—don’t overtighten plastic base.
Step 7: Reconnect wiring and reassemble the door
- Plug the mirror connector back in until it clicks (by hand).
- Re-stick the vapor barrier and press it firmly so it seals.
- Reconnect all door panel connectors (window switch, lights) by hand.
- Hang the door panel on the top ledge and press downward to seat it.
- Press the door panel clips back in around the edges using your palm.
- Reinstall screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver, then reinstall any small covers using a small flat-blade screwdriver.
- Reinstall the sail panel by lining up the clips and pressing it into place by hand.
Step 8: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten securely (snug; do not overtighten).
âś… After Repair
- Turn ignition ON and test mirror functions: adjust up/down/left/right, folding (if equipped), heat (if equipped), and turn signal (if equipped).
- Check that the mirror sits flush and the gasket seals evenly (no gaps).
- Confirm the window switch works. If auto-up/down acts strange, reinitialize: hold the window switch fully DOWN for 5 seconds, then fully UP for 5 seconds.
- Take a short drive and listen for wind noise; re-seat the sail panel if needed.
