🔧 340i - Side View Mirror Replacement
Replacing a side mirror usually means removing the interior door trim, unplugging the mirror wiring, and swapping the mirror assembly on the door. This is done when the housing is broken, the mirror won’t adjust, or the turn-signal/camera (if equipped) fails.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (one side)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ The door contains an airbag; disconnect the battery before unplugging door connectors.
- ⚠️ Support the mirror while removing nuts so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
- ⚠️ Protect painted edges with painter’s tape to prevent scratches.
- ⚠️ Keep ignition OFF and key away while connectors are unplugged.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the interior “sail panel” (triangle cover)
- Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) (specialty) to gently pry off the small triangle cover at the top-front corner of the door (inside, by the mirror).
- If it has a tweeter speaker, unplug the connector using the pick tool (small) (specialty) to lift the locking tab. Pull on the connector, not the wires.
Step 2: Remove the door pull/handle trim and screws
- Use the trim removal tool set (plastic) (specialty) to pop off the trim cover in the door pull handle area (where the screws hide).
- Remove the exposed screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver and/or Torx T25 screwdriver (varies by door trim).
Step 3: Release the door panel clips
- Starting at the bottom edge, slide in the trim removal tool set (plastic) (specialty) and pop the clips free one-by-one.
- Use a small flashlight to find clip locations if needed.
Step 4: Lift the door panel up and disconnect wiring
- Lift the door panel straight upward to unhook it from the top window ledge.
- Support the panel and unplug connectors (window switch, courtesy light, etc.). Use the pick tool (small) (specialty) to release locking tabs.
- If equipped, disconnect the door handle cable carefully (note routing for reassembly).
Step 5: Unplug the mirror harness
- Locate the mirror connector near the mirror mounting area behind the door panel.
- Unplug it using the pick tool (small) (specialty) to release the lock.
- If your mirror has extra features (blind-spot indicator, auto-dim, folding, camera), there may be additional connectors—unplug them the same way.
Step 6: Remove the mirror mounting nuts
- Hold the mirror on the outside with one hand.
- Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension to remove the 3 mirror nuts.
- Use a magnetic pickup tool so a nut doesn’t drop inside the door.
Step 7: Remove the mirror assembly
- Feed the mirror wiring and grommet out through the door opening.
- Remove the mirror from the outside. Keep it level so it doesn’t scrape paint.
Step 8: Install the new mirror assembly
- Feed the new mirror harness through the door and seat the mirror base on the door.
- Install the 3 nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten evenly using an 8mm socket.
- Final tighten with a torque wrench (2–20 Nm range) (specialty): Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect mirror wiring and reassemble the door
- Reconnect the mirror connector(s) until they click. Use a small flashlight to confirm full seating.
- Reconnect all door panel connectors and the door handle cable (if removed).
- Hang the door panel on the top edge first, then press clips in around the perimeter using firm hand pressure.
- Reinstall screws using the Torx T20 screwdriver / Torx T25 screwdriver, then snap trim covers back in.
- Reinstall the sail panel; reconnect tweeter if equipped.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Make sure the terminal is fully seated and snug.
âś… After Repair
- âś… Test mirror adjustment in all directions and mirror heating (if equipped).
- âś… If equipped, test power-fold, turn signal in mirror, blind-spot warning light, and camera view.
- âś… Initialize the window if needed: hold the window switch up for ~10 seconds after it fully closes.
- âś… If an airbag light appears, the car likely saw an unplugged connector; it may require a scan tool to clear.
