  • Rear shocks are easiest to remove with the axle safely supported.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses

  • 18mm socket
  • 21mm socket
  • 21mm wrench
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Penetrating oil
  • Trim clip removal tool

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Chock the wheels.
  • Loosen stuck fasteners with penetrating oil before starting.
  • Support the axle before removing rear shocks.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the truck

  • Use the floor jack to raise the truck safely.
  • Place jack stands under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
  • For rear shock work, keep the axle lightly supported with the floor jack.

Step 2: Remove the front wheels if replacing front shocks

  • Use the 21mm socket to remove the lug nuts.
  • Set the wheels aside.
  • Keep lug nuts in a safe tray.

Step 3: Remove the front shock absorber

  • Use the 15mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the lower shock bolt and nut.
  • Use the 15mm socket to remove the upper shock fastener.
  • Pull the shock out of the suspension.
  • If it is stuck, wiggle it gently by hand; do not pry on brake lines.
  • Torque: Tighten the front shock fasteners to factory service specification.

Step 4: Install the new front shock absorber

  • Position the new shock in place by hand.
  • Start the upper fastener first using the 15mm socket.
  • Install the lower bolt and nut using the 15mm socket and 21mm wrench.
  • Tighten both fasteners evenly.
  • Torque: Tighten to factory service specification.

Step 5: Remove the rear shock absorber

  • Keep the rear axle supported with the floor jack.
  • Use the 18mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the lower rear shock bolt.
  • Use the 18mm socket to remove the upper rear shock fastener.
  • Lower or raise the axle slightly with the jack if needed to free the shock.
  • Torque: Tighten the rear shock fasteners to factory service specification.

Step 6: Install the new rear shock absorber

  • Slide the new shock into position.
  • Install the upper fastener first using the 18mm socket.
  • Install the lower bolt and nut using the 18mm socket and 21mm wrench.
  • Snug both fasteners, then fully tighten with the axle at normal ride height if possible.
  • Torque: Tighten to factory service specification.
  • Final tightening at ride height helps bushings last longer.

Step 7: Reinstall wheels and lower the truck

  • Reinstall the wheels.
  • Use the 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck to the ground.
  • Torque the lug nuts to factory wheel-lug specification.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive slowly over a rough road and listen for clunks or rattles.
  • Check that the truck sits level and tracks straight.
  • Recheck all shock fasteners after a short test drive.
  • If you replaced only one side, expect uneven ride quality; replace shocks in pairs.
