🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement
The serpentine belt drives the front engine accessories. On your hybrid, this belt still needs to be in good shape so the engine-side components run correctly and quietly. If it is cracked, glazed, noisy, or slipping, replace it now before it fails.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Keep hands, hair, and clothing away from the belt path and pulleys.
- The hybrid system can start the engine automatically. Keep the vehicle OFF and the key/fob far away.
- Do not work near the orange high-voltage cables or hybrid components.
- No battery disconnect is normally required for this job.
- Let the engine cool before starting if it was recently running.

- Turn the vehicle OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle.
- Raise the front of the vehicle only if you need extra access from below.
- Take a photo of the belt routing first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Gain access to the belt
- If needed, use a jack and jack stands to raise the front of the vehicle safely.
- Remove any lower splash shield or access cover if it blocks the belt area. Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet if fasteners are present.
- Keep all hardware organized.
Step 2: Release belt tension
- Locate the belt tensioner and fit the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 14mm socket on the tensioner hex.
- Rotate the tensioner in the direction that loosens the belt.
- Move slowly to avoid slipping.
Step 3: Remove the old belt
- While holding the tensioner released, slip the belt off one accessible pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys and pull it out of the engine bay.
Step 4: Compare and route the new belt
- Compare the old belt to the new one for length and rib count.
- Route the new belt around the pulleys exactly the same way as the original.
- Leave one smooth pulley for last so you can slip the belt on more easily.
Step 5: Install the new belt
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 14mm socket to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt fully onto the last pulley.
- Release the tensioner slowly and check that the belt is seated in every pulley groove.
Step 6: Inspect the installation
- Use a flashlight to confirm the belt is centered on every ribbed pulley.
- Make sure the belt is not twisted and is fully seated on the tensioner.
- Reinstall any splash shield or cover you removed.
✅ After Repair
- Start the vehicle and watch the belt for a few seconds.
- Listen for squealing, chirping, or rubbing noises.
- Check that the belt tracks smoothly and stays centered.
- Recheck the belt routing after a short test drive.
