🔧 RAV4 - Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt drives the alternator, water pump, and other engine accessories. On your RAV4, replacement is straightforward, but belt routing and tensioner control matter so the new belt seats correctly and doesn’t squeal or walk off a pulley.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work only on a cool engine. Hot pulleys and belts can cause burns.
  • Keep hands, clothing, and tools clear of the fan and pulleys.
  • If you raise the vehicle for access, support it with jack stands. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • Disconnecting the battery is not required for this job.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm serpentine belt tensioner wrench
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive breaker bar
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet extension
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • If needed for extra access, raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands.
  • Find the belt routing diagram under the hood before removing the old belt.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt routing

  • Open the hood and find the belt routing diagram on the underside of the hood or near the radiator support.
  • If the sticker is missing, use a flashlight and trace the belt path before removal.
  • Take a clear photo before touching anything.

Step 2: Release belt tension

  • Place the 14mm serpentine belt tensioner wrench or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve tension from the belt.
  • Keep your other hand away from the pulleys while the tensioner is loaded.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • With the tension held back, slip the belt off one of the easiest accessible pulleys.
  • Slowly release the tensioner and remove the belt from all pulleys.
  • Inspect the old belt for cracks, glazing, or missing ribs.

Step 4: Inspect the pulleys

  • Spin each accessible pulley by hand and listen for roughness or noise.
  • Check the tensioner pulley for wobble and smooth movement.
  • If a pulley feels rough, replace it before installing the new belt.

Step 5: Install the new belt

  • Route the new belt around all pulleys except the last easy-to-reach pulley.
  • Follow the routing diagram exactly.
  • Leave the smoothest final pulley for last so the belt can slip on easily.

Step 6: Seat the belt on the final pulley

  • Rotate the tensioner again with the 14mm serpentine belt tensioner wrench or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar.
  • Slip the belt fully onto the last pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner and confirm the belt sits centered on every pulley.
  • Check every rib is in the pulley grooves.

Step 7: Final inspection

  • Turn the engine by hand only if needed to confirm seating, using the proper tool on the crank pulley if accessible and safe.
  • Recheck the routing, belt alignment, and tensioner position.
  • If you raised the vehicle, lower it safely before starting the engine.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for squealing, chirping, or rubbing.
  • Watch the belt for a minute to make sure it tracks straight.
  • Turn the steering wheel, switch on the A/C, and let the engine idle to confirm normal accessory operation.
  • If the belt makes noise, shut the engine off and recheck routing and pulley seating.
