Step 1: Confirm belt routing (most important step)

  • If there’s no sticker, use your phone to take a clear photo of the belt routing.
  • Also draw a simple sketch showing which pulleys are ribbed vs smooth.

Step 2: Gain access to the belt area

  • From the top: use your hands to remove the plastic engine cover if equipped (it typically pulls upward from rubber grommets).
  • If access is tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver and flat trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic clips holding the upper air duct/snorkel in place.
  • If you need wheel-well access: use wheel chocks, lift with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then remove the splash shield fasteners using a flat trim clip removal tool.

Step 3: Relieve tension with the automatic tensioner

  • Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm with a pulley).
  • Install your serpentine belt tool (specialty) or a 3/8" drive ratchet into the tensioner’s drive feature (square hole or bolt head, depending on design).
  • Rotate the tensioner smoothly to relieve belt tension while keeping your fingers clear of pinch points.
  • Hold steady; don’t let the tensioner snap back.

Step 4: Remove the old belt

  • While holding the tensioner released, slip the belt off the easiest-to-reach upper pulley by hand.
  • Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position using the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys and pull it out of the engine bay.

Step 5: Inspect pulleys and tensioner before installing the new belt

  • With the belt off, spin each pulley by hand and feel for roughness or hear grinding.
  • Check the tensioner pulley for wobble and the tensioner arm for weak/jerky movement.
  • If anything is noisy/rough, plan to replace the belt tensioner assembly and/or idler pulley before installing the new belt.

Step 6: Route the new belt

  • Route the new belt around the pulleys following the sticker/photo you captured.
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit fully inside the grooves on ribbed pulleys, and the belt sits centered on smooth pulleys.
  • Leave the easiest-to-reach pulley for last (usually an upper pulley).

Step 7: Apply tension and seat the belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 3/8" drive ratchet to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the final pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back against the belt.
  • Use a flashlight to re-check every pulley: fully seated, no ribs hanging off an edge.

Step 8: Reinstall any removed covers/ducting

  • Reinstall any splash shields and clips you removed using a flat trim clip removal tool and flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the engine cover by aligning the grommets and pressing down firmly by hand.

  • Do a final visual check with a flashlight that the belt is centered on every pulley.
  • Start the car and watch the belt for 20-30 seconds: it should run smoothly with no wandering or squeal.
