🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement

The serpentine belt drives the engine accessories on your CR-V, including the alternator and A/C compressor. On the 1.5L turbo, belt access is tight, so you’ll usually work from the passenger-side wheel well after removing the splash shield.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool fully before starting. The belt area sits near hot components.
  • Do not place fingers near the tensioner path while releasing belt tension.
  • Support the vehicle securely on jack stands before removing the wheel.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the passenger front corner and support it with a jack stand.
  • Remove the passenger front wheel for better access.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open up the belt area

  • Use a 19mm socket and ratchet to remove the passenger front wheel lug nuts, then remove the wheel.
  • Use a Torx T25 screwdriver and trim clip removal tool to remove the front splash shield fasteners in the passenger wheel well.
  • Pull the splash shield aside to expose the serpentine belt and tensioner.

Step 2: Release belt tension

  • Locate the automatic belt tensioner.
  • Use a breaker bar on the tensioner arm and rotate it to relieve belt tension.
  • Move slowly to avoid slipping.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • Slide the belt off one accessible pulley while holding tension off with the breaker bar.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its stop.
  • Remove the belt from all pulleys and pull it out through the wheel well.

Step 4: Inspect the pulleys

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the belt tensioner, idler pulley, and accessory pulleys.
  • Check for cracks, wobble, rough spinning, or oil contamination.
  • If a pulley feels rough or loose, replace that part before installing the new belt.

Step 5: Install the new belt

  • Route the new belt around all pulleys except the easiest final pulley.
  • Use the breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again and slide the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Make sure every rib sits fully in every pulley groove.
  • Check the routing twice.

Step 6: Reassemble and verify

  • Reinstall the splash shield using the Torx T25 screwdriver and trim clip removal tool.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts with the 19mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
  • Start the engine and watch the belt for smooth tracking.

✅ After Repair

  • Listen for squealing, chirping, or ticking noises.
  • Watch the belt for wobble or walking off a pulley.
  • Turn the steering wheel and switch on the A/C to confirm normal accessory operation.
  • Recheck the lug nut torque after a short drive.
