🔧 Highlander - Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt drives important accessories like the alternator, A/C compressor, and water pump-related systems on your Highlander. Replacing it involves releasing the automatic belt tensioner, removing the old belt, routing the new belt correctly, and checking that it sits fully in every pulley groove.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work only with the engine completely off and cool.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers, sleeves, hair, and tools away from pulleys and the belt path.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine until the belt is fully seated on every pulley.
  • ⚠️ Disconnecting the battery is not required for this repair, but keep the key away from the vehicle while working.
  • ⚠️ If the belt is frayed, cracked, squealing, or missing ribs, inspect all pulleys before installing the new belt.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive long-handled breaker bar
  • Work light
  • Paint marker
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Highlander on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before reaching into the engine bay.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Use a work light to look at the belt routing before removal.
  • Take a photo of the belt path with your phone. This is your backup if you forget the routing.
  • A serpentine belt tool is a long, flat handle that gives extra reach to move the spring-loaded belt tensioner.
  • The belt tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight automatically.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Belt and Routing

  • Use a work light to find the serpentine belt on the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • Look for the belt routing label under the hood or near the radiator support.
  • If the routing label is missing, use your phone photo as the guide.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the smooth back side of the old belt if you want to track how it was installed.
  • Take a photo before removing anything.

Step 2: Identify the Automatic Belt Tensioner

  • Use a work light to locate the automatic belt tensioner near the front/passenger side of the engine.
  • Find the 14mm hex area on the tensioner arm.
  • The tensioner pulley is the smooth pulley attached to a spring-loaded arm.
  • Do not loosen the center bolt of the tensioner pulley. You only rotate the tensioner arm to release belt tension.

Step 3: Release Belt Tension

  • Install the 14mm socket onto the 3/8-inch drive long-handled breaker bar or 14mm serpentine belt tool.
  • Place the 14mm socket on the tensioner hex.
  • Slowly rotate the tensioner clockwise to relieve tension from the belt.
  • Hold the tensioner steady while you slide the belt off one easy-to-reach upper pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
  • Move slowly; the tensioner spring is strong.

Step 4: Remove the Old Belt

  • Use your hands with mechanic gloves to pull the old belt out from around the pulleys.
  • Compare the old belt to the new serpentine drive belt.
  • Make sure the new belt has the same rib count and nearly the same length.
  • Do not force the belt past sharp brackets or wiring.

Step 5: Inspect the Pulleys

  • Use your hand to spin the accessible idler and tensioner pulleys.
  • An idler pulley is a free-spinning guide pulley that helps route the belt.
  • Listen and feel for grinding, wobbling, looseness, or rough movement.
  • Check that all pulley grooves are clean and free of old rubber pieces.
  • If any pulley feels rough or wobbly, replace it before installing the new belt.

Step 6: Route the New Belt

  • Use the routing label or your phone photo to route the new belt around the lower pulleys first.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in ribbed pulleys.
  • Make sure the smooth back side of the belt rides on smooth pulleys.
  • Leave one easy-to-reach upper pulley for last.
  • Use your fingers to press the belt fully into each pulley groove.
  • One rib off can destroy the new belt.

Step 7: Reinstall Belt Over the Final Pulley

  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive long-handled breaker bar or 14mm serpentine belt tool on the tensioner hex again.
  • Rotate the tensioner clockwise to create slack.
  • Slide the new belt over the final pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner until it applies tension to the belt.
  • Remove the 14mm socket and tool from the engine bay.

Step 8: Verify Belt Alignment

  • Use a work light to inspect every pulley from above.
  • Confirm the belt ribs are centered in the pulley grooves.
  • Confirm the belt is not hanging off the edge of any pulley.
  • Use the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 14mm socket only if you need to slightly relieve tension again and reposition the belt.
  • No torque spec is required because no mounting bolts are removed for normal belt replacement.

Step 9: Start and Check Operation

  • Make sure all tools are removed from the engine bay.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Watch the belt from a safe distance. It should run smoothly with no wobble, squeal, or walking off a pulley.
  • Turn the engine off and recheck belt seating with the work light.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Listen for squealing, chirping, or slapping noises during the first startup.
  • ✅ Turn on the A/C and headlights to place load on the belt-driven accessories, then listen again.
  • ✅ After a short drive, shut the engine off and recheck belt alignment once the engine is safe to approach.
  • ✅ If the belt keeps walking off a pulley, do not drive. A pulley, tensioner, or accessory may be misaligned.
