šŸ”§ Highlander - Serpentine Belt Replacement

Your Highlander uses a single accessory drive belt (often called the serpentine belt) to spin the alternator, A/C compressor, and other pulleys. Replacing it is mostly about safely relieving belt tension, routing the new belt correctly, and confirming everything tracks straight.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a cool engine—hot radiator fans and pulleys can injure you.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers and loose clothing away from the belt path.
  • āš ļø Support the SUV with jack stands—never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • āš ļø If you remove a wheel, re-torque the lug nuts correctly after.
  • āœ… Battery disconnect is not required for belt replacement, but keep the key fob away from the vehicle so it can’t be started accidentally.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • Socket extension set (3" and 6")
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt (accessory drive belt) - Qty: 1
  • Engine under-cover clips - Qty: 2-10

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Take a quick photo of the belt routing before removal (your phone photo is your ā€œrouting diagramā€).
  • Locate the factory belt routing decal (usually on the radiator support area). If it’s missing, rely on your photo.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front passenger side

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front passenger-side jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).

Step 2: Remove the front passenger wheel (for access)

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar to loosen and remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield / fender liner access panel

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove any small bolts holding the panel.
  • Pull the access panel back to expose the belt and tensioner area.

Step 4: Identify the belt tensioner and choose the correct socket

  • Use a flashlight to find the belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm with a pulley).
  • Test-fit a 14mm socket or 19mm socket on the tensioner’s hex/bolt head (Toyota setups can vary by hardware).
  • A breaker bar gives you safe leverage.

Step 5: Relieve belt tension

  • Install the correct socket (14mm socket or 19mm socket) on a 1/2" drive breaker bar.
  • Rotate the tensioner smoothly to release tension (you’ll feel the spring load).
  • While holding the tensioner released, slide the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley (usually an upper pulley you can reach from the wheel well).

Step 6: Remove the old belt and compare lengths

  • Slowly let the tensioner return to rest (do not let it snap back) using the 1/2" drive breaker bar.
  • Remove the belt completely by hand from all pulleys.
  • Lay the old and new belts side-by-side and confirm the same length and rib count.

Step 7: Route the new belt

  • Route the new belt around all pulleys except one ā€œlast pulley,ā€ using your photo/routing decal as the guide.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in the ribbed pulley grooves and the smooth side sits on smooth pulleys.
  • Use a flashlight to verify the belt is centered in every pulley groove.

Step 8: Apply tension and slip the belt onto the last pulley

  • Rotate the tensioner again using the 1/2" drive breaker bar with the correct socket (14mm or 19mm).
  • Slip the belt onto the final pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back onto the belt.
  • If it won’t slip on, re-check routing.

Step 9: Reinstall splash shield / liner and wheel

  • Reinstall the access panel using the 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool (push clips back in).
  • Reinstall the wheel using the 21mm socket and snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Lower the vehicle using the floor jack.
  • Final tighten lug nuts: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle while you watch the belt for 30–60 seconds (from a safe distance).
  • Listen for squealing, slapping, or chirping—those usually mean misrouting or the belt not seated in grooves.
  • Turn on A/C and headlights to load the belt system and confirm it runs smoothly.
  • Recheck that all splash shield clips/bolts are installed and nothing is rubbing the belt.
