🔧 Canyon - Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt drives accessories like the alternator, A/C compressor, and power steering (if equipped). Replacement is mainly about safely relieving the spring tension, swapping the belt, then confirming the belt is routed correctly on every pulley.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine; keep hands away from the fan and pulleys.
  • ⚠️ Remove keys from the vehicle so nobody can start it.
  • ⚠️ Do not put fingers between the belt and pulleys while releasing tension.
  • ⚠️ If the belt is shredded, check for debris around pulleys before restarting.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but keep tools away from the positive terminal.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Flashlight
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive breaker bar
  • 15mm socket
  • Torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine fully cool.
  • Find the belt routing diagram (usually a sticker in the engine bay). If it’s missing, take a clear photo of the current routing before removal.
  • Know what you’re moving: the belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley assembly that keeps the belt tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt and tensioner

  • Use a flashlight to locate the serpentine belt on the front of the engine.
  • Identify the belt tensioner pulley (it’s the pulley attached to a spring-loaded arm).

Step 2: Relieve belt tension

  • Install a 15mm socket on the tensioner’s hex (or use the tensioner’s square drive if yours has one) with a 3/8" drive breaker bar.
  • Slowly rotate the tensioner to release tension. Move it smoothly—don’t let it snap back.
  • While holding tension off, slide the belt off the easiest-to-reach smooth pulley using your gloved hand.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • Let the tensioner return to rest slowly using the 3/8" drive breaker bar.
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys by hand.
  • Compare old vs new belt length and rib count before installing.

Step 4: Route the new belt

  • Route the new belt exactly like the underhood diagram (or your photo).
  • Make sure the ribbed side sits fully in the grooves of every ribbed pulley.
  • Leave the easiest-to-reach pulley for last (this makes the final install easier).

Step 5: Re-apply tension and seat the belt

  • Use the 15mm socket and 3/8" drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner so it tightens the belt.

Step 6: Final alignment check

  • Use a flashlight to check every pulley: the belt must be centered and fully seated in the grooves.
  • If you removed any components for access (varies by setup), reinstall and Torque to the factory spec using a torque wrench.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for 20-30 seconds (keep hands and tools clear).
  • Listen for chirping/squealing. If you hear it, shut off the engine and re-check that the belt is fully seated on every pulley.
  • Recheck belt tracking again after a short 5-minute drive.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $150-$250 (parts + labor)
