🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement

The serpentine belt drives the alternator, water pump, and other accessories. On your Highlander, belt replacement is straightforward once the tensioner is relieved and the belt is routed correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine completely off and cool.
  • Keep fingers, clothing, and tools clear of the belt path and pulleys.
  • Do not start the engine with the belt removed.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and locate the belt routing sticker if still present.
  • If the routing sticker is missing, use the belt path from the old belt before removing it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt tensioner

  • Open the hood and find the serpentine belt on the front of the engine.
  • Locate the belt tensioner arm and the 14mm hex on the tensioner.
  • Look for the spring-loaded arm.

Step 2: Release belt tension

  • Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner away from the belt.
  • Move the tensioner slowly and keep hands clear of the pulleys.
  • Once the belt loosens, slide it off one accessible pulley.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • Use your hands to pull the belt off the remaining pulleys.
  • Note the exact belt routing before removal if you have not already taken a photo.
  • Inspect each pulley for wobble, damage, or rough spin by hand.

Step 4: Install the new belt

  • Route the new belt around all pulleys except the easiest-to-access one last.
  • Make sure the ribs in the belt sit fully in each grooved pulley.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to relieve the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt over the last pulley while holding the tensioner back.
  • Release the tensioner slowly and confirm the belt is seated correctly on every pulley.
  • Double-check each groove by eye.

Step 5: Verify installation

  • Inspect the full belt path one more time for correct routing.
  • Make sure the belt is centered on every pulley.
  • Torque: No fasteners are removed for the belt itself; if the tensioner was loosened or removed, torque to factory specification.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for smooth operation.
  • Listen for squealing, chirping, or rubbing noises.
  • Turn the steering wheel and switch on the A/C briefly to confirm normal accessory operation.
  • If the belt tracks off-center, shut the engine off and recheck routing.
