🔧 Malibu - Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt drives accessories like the alternator and A/C. On your Malibu, you’ll release the automatic belt tensioner, slip the old belt off, then route and install the new belt using the factory routing diagram.

  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands if you remove the RF wheel; never rely on a jack.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine until tools are fully removed from the belt area.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the key away from the car to prevent an accidental start.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the left rear wheel with wheel chocks.
  • Open the hood and find the belt routing diagram (usually on the radiator support/underhood label). Take a clear photo with your phone.
  • If access is tight from above, plan to remove the right-front wheel and front portion of the splash shield for side access.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the right-front corner (for easiest access)

  • Use a 21mm socket with a 1/2" drive breaker bar to loosen (do not remove) the right-front lug nuts.
  • Lift the right-front using a floor jack at the proper jacking point, then set the car onto jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel using a 21mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet.
  • Reinstall later and Torque lug nuts to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).

Step 2: Move the splash shield / fender liner out of the way

  • Use a trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver to remove the plastic push-clips/screws at the front of the right fender liner.
  • Pull the liner back just enough to see the belt, crank pulley, and tensioner. Use a flashlight to confirm the belt path.
  • Tip: Keep clips in a small cup.

Step 3: Locate the belt tensioner

  • Look for the spring-loaded arm with a pulley on it (that’s the tensioner). The “release point” is usually a hex for a socket.
  • Fit a 15mm socket onto the tensioner hex using a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or a 1/2" drive ratchet with a 3" extension.
  • Serpentine belt tool = long, thin ratchet for tight spaces.

Step 4: Release tension and remove the old belt

  • Rotate the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to relieve belt tension (you’ll feel strong spring force).
  • While holding the tensioner released, slide the belt off one easy-to-reach smooth pulley (often an idler) using your free hand.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to rest. Do not let it snap back.
  • Remove the belt fully by pulling it out through the wheel-well opening.

Step 5: Inspect pulleys before installing the new belt

  • Spin each accessible pulley by hand (alternator, idler, tensioner pulley, A/C). They should spin smoothly and quietly.
  • If a pulley feels rough, wobbles, or squeals, plan to replace the idler pulley and/or belt tensioner.

Step 6: Route the new belt

  • Compare the old belt to the new one (length and rib count) before installation.
  • Route the new belt using the underhood routing diagram photo you took.
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit fully inside the grooved pulleys (crank/alternator). A belt that’s “one rib off” will shred quickly.
  • Leave the belt off one last pulley (usually an upper smooth pulley) to make tensioning easier.

Step 7: Apply tension and seat the belt

  • Rotate the tensioner again using the 15mm socket and serpentine belt tool (specialty).
  • Slip the belt onto the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner so it tightens the belt.
  • Double-check every pulley with a flashlight: the belt must be centered and fully seated.

Step 8: Reassemble the splash shield and wheel

  • Reposition the liner and reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the wheel using a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the car and use a torque wrench: Torque lug nuts to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for 20-30 seconds. It should run smooth with no hopping or wandering.
  • Listen for squeal, chirp, or grinding. If you hear noise, shut off and re-check belt seating and pulley condition.
  • Take a short test drive, then recheck visually to ensure the belt is still centered.
