🔧 Camaro - Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt on your Camaro drives key accessories (like the alternator and A/C). Replacing it is mostly about safely relieving belt tension with the automatic tensioner, swapping the belt, then confirming the routing is correct.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine; the belt area can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers/clothing clear of pulleys; never check belt tracking with the engine running up close.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands if you lift it; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for belt replacement, but keep the key away so the engine can’t be started accidentally.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive breaker bar
  • 3/8" drive extension set
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Smartphone camera

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt (accessory drive belt) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, put the transmission in reverse (manual), and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram (usually on the fan shroud/upper radiator support area). If it’s missing, take a clear photo of the current belt routing using your smartphone camera.
  • If access is tight from above, plan to remove the right-front lower splash shield area for more room.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm belt routing

  • Use a flashlight to visually trace the belt around each pulley.
  • Take a clear reference picture with your smartphone camera. This prevents wrong routing later.
  • Compare to the underhood routing diagram if present.

Step 2: Raise the front-right (if needed for access)

  • Position the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper front-right jacking point and lift the car.
  • Set the car securely onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Leave wheel chocks in place at the rear wheels.

Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield fasteners (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic push clips.
  • Use a 3/8" drive ratchet with the appropriate socket from your 3/8" drive extension set to remove any small bolts (varies by shield).
  • Set all clips/bolts aside in a small pile so nothing is lost.

Step 4: Relieve belt tension with the automatic tensioner

  • Locate the belt tensioner. The tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley assembly that keeps the belt tight automatically.
  • Install a 15mm socket on the tensioner bolt head using a 3/8" drive breaker bar (a breaker bar is a long-handled wrench for extra leverage).
  • Rotate the tensioner smoothly to release tension (it will feel spring-loaded). Move slowly and keep knuckles clear.

Step 5: Slip the belt off and remove it

  • While holding the tensioner released with the 3/8" drive breaker bar, use your free hand to slide the belt off the easiest-to-reach smooth pulley (often an idler pulley).
  • Slowly return the tensioner back to its resting position using the 3/8" drive breaker bar. Do not let it snap back.
  • Remove the belt fully from all pulleys.

Step 6: Inspect pulleys and tensioner quickly

  • Use a flashlight to check each pulley for cracks, heavy rust, or wobble.
  • Spin pulleys by hand (engine OFF). They should spin smoothly and quietly.
  • If you hear grinding, feel roughness, or see wobble, stop and tell me which pulley—your Camaro may need an idler/tensioner service too.

Step 7: Install the new belt (route it correctly)

  • Route the new belt to match your photo/diagram, using the flashlight to confirm each wrap.
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit perfectly into the grooved pulleys; the belt must not ride on the edge.
  • Leave the easiest pulley for last so you have slack to slip it on.

Step 8: Apply tension and seat the belt

  • Use the 15mm socket and 3/8" drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner back into position.
  • Re-check every pulley: the belt must be centered and fully seated in every groove.
  • Torque note: This job typically requires no bolt tightening if you did not remove any components. If you removed any shield bolts, tighten them snugly with a 3/8" drive ratchet (no torque spec required for plastic shields).

Step 9: Reinstall splash shield and lower the car (if removed/raised)

  • Reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool to align and press them back in.
  • Reinstall any bolts using a 3/8" drive ratchet and 3/8" drive extension set.
  • Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then lower the car.

✅ After Repair

  • Before starting, do a final visual check with a flashlight that the belt is on every pulley correctly.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds while you watch the belt from a safe distance.
  • Listen for squealing or slapping noises; shut it off immediately if the belt walks off a pulley.
  • After a short drive, re-check belt alignment one more time.
