🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement

The serpentine belt is the long ribbed belt that drives the alternator, A/C compressor, and other accessories. On your Rogue, replacing it is mostly about safely relieving the automatic tensioner, routing the new belt correctly, and making sure it sits fully in every pulley groove.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before working near the belt path.
  • Keep fingers, clothing, and tools clear of the tensioner spring area.
  • Do not start the engine until you have confirmed the belt is seated in every pulley groove.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Tip: Take a photo of the belt routing first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 14mm socket
  • 14mm wrench
  • Breaker bar
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram if one is present.
  • If you do not see a routing label, take a clear photo of the current belt path before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the belt area

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the belt, pulleys, and tensioner on the front of the engine.
  • If access is tight from above, raise the front of the Rogue with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands.
  • Remove the right front inner splash shield fasteners only if needed for better access. Use the correct socket or trim tool if equipped.

Step 2: Note the belt routing

  • Use a flashlight and inspect how the belt wraps around each pulley.
  • Take a photo or draw the routing path before removing the belt.
  • Tip: The smooth side rides on smooth pulleys.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • Fit a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar onto the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner in the direction that relieves belt tension.
  • Hold the tensioner steady while slipping the belt off one accessible pulley.
  • Torque: N/A for belt removal; no fasteners are removed in this step.

Step 4: Remove the old belt

  • Slowly release the tensioner with the 14mm socket and remove the belt from the remaining pulleys.
  • Pull the belt out of the engine bay and compare it to the new one for length and rib count.

Step 5: Install the new belt

  • Route the new serpentine belt around all pulleys except one easy-to-reach pulley.
  • Make sure the ribs are fully seated in every grooved pulley.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to move the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the last pulley while keeping tension on the tensioner.
  • Slowly release the tensioner once the belt is fully installed.

Step 6: Inspect the install

  • Check every pulley to confirm the belt is centered and fully seated.
  • Look for twisted sections, missing ribs, or a belt edge hanging off a pulley.
  • If the belt is not seated correctly, remove it and reinstall it before starting the engine.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for squealing, chirping, or rubbing.
  • Watch the belt for a few seconds to confirm smooth tracking.
  • Turn the steering wheel slightly and switch the A/C on to load the belt, then listen again.
  • Shut the engine off and recheck belt alignment if you hear any noise.
