🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement

The serpentine belt drives key engine accessories like the alternator, A/C compressor, and power steering pump. On your Sierra, replacement is straightforward, but belt routing must be exact and the tensioner must be fully released before removal.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine completely cool.
  • Keep fingers, clothing, and tools away from the belt path and pulleys.
  • Do not start the engine with the belt removed.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 15mm wrench
  • Breaker bar
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before touching the belt or pulleys.
  • Inspect the belt routing diagram under the hood if present.
  • Check the tensioner and pulleys for noise or wobble before installing the new belt.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Record the belt routing

  • Use a phone or draw a quick sketch of the belt path before removing anything.
  • Look for the routing diagram on the radiator support or underside of the hood.
  • Routing mistakes are the most common problem.

Step 2: Locate the belt tensioner

  • Find the spring-loaded belt tensioner at the front of the engine.
  • Use a 15mm wrench or breaker bar on the tensioner arm.
  • The tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • Use the 15mm wrench or breaker bar to rotate the tensioner clockwise and relieve belt tension.
  • Keep firm control of the tensioner so it does not snap back.
  • Slip the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley while holding tension off with the tool.

Step 4: Remove the old belt

  • Use your hands to pull the belt off the remaining pulleys.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.
  • Remove the belt from the engine bay.

Step 5: Inspect pulleys and tensioner

  • Use a flashlight to inspect each pulley for cracks, wobble, or rough spots.
  • Spin each smooth pulley by hand and listen for noise.
  • If the tensioner feels loose or jerky, it should be replaced before installing the new belt.

Step 6: Install the new belt

  • Route the new belt around all pulleys except one easy-to-reach pulley.
  • Use the 15mm wrench or breaker bar to release the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the last pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Make sure every rib is seated correctly in every pulley groove.
  • Recheck routing before starting the engine.

Step 7: Verify belt alignment

  • Use a flashlight to confirm the belt sits centered on each pulley.
  • Look across the pulley faces to make sure the belt is not twisted or riding off-edge.
  • Spin the crankshaft pulley by hand only if needed for a final routing check and the engine is off.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for 30-60 seconds.
  • Listen for squealing, chirping, or slapping noises.
  • Shut the engine off and recheck belt seating if anything looks off.
  • Reinspect after a short test drive.
