- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Power the car OFF and keep the key fob at least 15 feet away.
- Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket. (On your Camry Hybrid, the 12V battery is in the trunk on the right side behind the trim panel.)
- Look for the belt routing diagram sticker under the hood; if it’s missing, take a clear photo of the current belt routing with your phone.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the right front wheel
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2" breaker bar to slightly loosen the lug nuts while the tire is still on the ground.
- Lift the right front corner with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
- Remove the lug nuts with the 21mm socket and remove the wheel.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.
Step 2: Remove the right-side splash shield (fender liner access panel)
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic push clips.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove any small bolts holding the access panel.
- Peel the liner back enough to clearly see the belt and the belt tensioner.
- Save clips in a cup so none get lost.
Step 3: Locate the belt tensioner and relieve tension
- Find the belt tensioner (the spring-loaded arm with a pulley). A “tensioner” keeps the belt tight automatically.
- Install a 19mm socket on the tensioner’s hex and attach your 1/2" breaker bar.
- Rotate the tensioner smoothly to relieve belt tension (it will feel strong because it’s spring-loaded).
- While holding the tensioner rotated, slip the belt off the easiest-to-reach smooth pulley.
Step 4: Remove the old belt
- Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position using the 1/2" breaker bar.
- Pull the belt out from around the pulleys.
- Use a flashlight to inspect pulleys for wobble, cracks, or rough spinning by hand.
Step 5: Install the new belt (confirm routing and rib alignment)
- Route the new belt the same way as the diagram/photo.
- Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits perfectly in the ribbed pulleys (you should see the ribs “nest” in the grooves).
- Leave the belt off one easy pulley for last so you have room to slip it on.
- If one rib is off, it will shred fast.
Step 6: Re-apply tension and seat the belt fully
- Use the 19mm socket and 1/2" breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt onto the last pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Visually check every pulley: the belt must be centered and fully seated in each groove.
Step 7: Reinstall splash shield and wheel
- Reposition the splash shield and reinstall bolts with a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Reinstall push clips using a trim clip removal tool (and your hand pressure).
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts.
- Lower the car and use a torque wrench to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the 12V battery
- Reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Make sure the terminal clamp is snug and cannot rotate by hand.

- Start your Camry and let it idle while you watch the belt path for 30-60 seconds (keep hands and tools away).
- Listen for squealing or chirping; if you hear it, shut the car off and re-check belt alignment on every pulley.
- After a short test drive, re-check that the belt is still tracking centered on the pulleys.
