🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement

Your belt drives key accessories like the alternator, A/C compressor, and water pump. On your Camry, replacement is straightforward, but belt routing must be followed exactly to avoid squeal, charging issues, or belt damage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Engine must be off and completely cool before starting.
  • Keep fingers, hair, and clothing away from the belt path and pulleys.
  • Do not start the engine with the belt removed.
  • If the belt is cracked, glazed, or shredded, inspect the tensioner and pulleys before installing the new belt.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for belt replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 19mm wrench
  • 3/8-inch drive breaker bar
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool down fully.
  • Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram under the hood or near the radiator support.
  • Take a photo of the belt before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt tensioner

  • Open the hood and find the automatic belt tensioner on the front of the engine.
  • Use a 19mm wrench or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar on the tensioner arm.
  • Move slowly and keep control.

Step 2: Relieve belt tension

  • Rotate the tensioner in the direction that unloads the belt.
  • Keep the tool steady and slide the belt off one smooth pulley, usually an accessible idler or alternator pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly once the belt is off.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • Pull the belt out of the engine bay.
  • Inspect it for cracks, glazing, missing ribs, or fraying.
  • Check every pulley by hand for roughness, wobble, or noise.

Step 4: Route the new belt

  • Compare the new belt to the old one to confirm length and rib count.
  • Route the belt around all pulleys except the easiest final pulley to access.
  • Follow the under-hood routing diagram exactly.
  • Make sure the ribs sit fully in every grooved pulley.

Step 5: Install the belt on the last pulley

  • Use the 19mm wrench or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the last pulley while holding the tensioner back.
  • Slowly release the tensioner and confirm the belt stays seated.

Step 6: Verify belt alignment

  • Inspect each pulley from above to make sure the belt is centered and fully seated.
  • Spin the engine by hand only if needed and safe to do so, using the belt path as a final check.
  • No fastener torque is required for this job unless you replaced a pulley or tensioner.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for squeal, chirping, or rubbing noises.
  • Turn on the A/C and headlights to confirm normal operation.
  • Watch the belt for 1-2 minutes to make sure it tracks straight.
  • If the belt slips or makes noise, recheck routing and pulley condition.
