š Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Make sure the hybrid system is OFF and the key fob is kept away from the car.
- Take a quick photo of the belt routing before removal (your phone is your best ādiagramā).
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the front-right corner safely
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the front-right lug nuts 1/2 turn (do not remove yet).
- Lift the front-right with a floor jack and set the car on jack stands.
- Remove the wheel using the 21mm socket.
- Reinstall lug nuts later: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs)
Step 2: Remove the right-side splash shield for access
- Use a 10mm socket to remove splash shield screws/bolts.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out plastic clips (a clip tool is a small forked pry tool that removes push-clips without breaking them).
- Pull the shield back to expose the belt, pulleys, and tensioner.
Step 3: Relieve belt tension
- Locate the automatic belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm with a pulley).
- Put a 19mm socket on the tensionerās hex/bolt head.
- Use a breaker bar to rotate the tensioner to relieve tension.
- Hold steadyāspring tension is strong.
Step 4: Remove the old belt
- While holding the tensioner released with the breaker bar, slide the belt off the easiest-to-reach pulley.
- Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position (do not let it snap).
- Remove the belt fully and compare it to the new belt (length and rib count should match).
Step 5: Install the new belt (route it correctly)
- Route the new belt around the pulleys exactly like your photo.
- Make sure the belt ribs sit fully inside the grooves on ribbed pulleys (no ribs hanging off).
- Leave the easiest pulley for last.
Step 6: Apply tension and seat the belt
- Use the 19mm socket and breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt onto the last pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Visually check alignment on every pulley from the side.
- If itās off by 1 rib, redo it.
Step 7: Reassemble splash shield and wheel
- Reinstall the splash shield using the 10mm socket and any clips you removed.
- Reinstall the wheel using the 21mm socket.
- Lower the car off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs)
ā After Repair
- Start the car and listen: there should be no squeal, slap, or chirp.
- Let it idle for 30-60 seconds while you watch the belt from a safe distance (hands clear).
- Shut it off and re-check belt seating if you notice any noise.
- After a short test drive, do a final quick visual check for alignment.
