🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement

The serpentine belt drives the alternator, A/C compressor, and other accessories. On your Explorer, the belt is released by the spring-loaded tensioner, then routed back on in the exact factory path.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a cold engine only.
  • Keep fingers clear of the tensioner and pulleys.
  • Do not start the engine with the belt removed.
  • If you are removing the battery cover or using tools near the fan area, make sure the ignition is off and the key is away from the vehicle.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 15mm serpentine belt wrench or ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • Socket extension
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Open the hood and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • Inspect the belt routing diagram under the hood before removing the old belt. If the diagram is missing, take a photo of the original routing first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the belt area

  • Use a trim clip tool to remove any engine cover or intake duct pieces that block access to the belt path.
  • Set the parts aside in order so they go back the same way.

Step 2: Locate the tensioner

  • Find the spring-loaded belt tensioner at the front of the engine.
  • Use a 15mm serpentine belt wrench or ratchet on the tensioner arm.
  • Move it smoothly.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • Rotate the tensioner in the direction that relieves belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley while holding the tensioner back with the 15mm serpentine belt wrench or ratchet.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.

Step 4: Remove the old belt

  • Pull the belt out of the engine bay by hand.
  • Check the pulleys for damage, noise, or wobble while the belt is off.

Step 5: Route the new belt

  • Compare the new belt to the old one to confirm length.
  • Route the new belt around all pulleys except one easy-access pulley, matching the factory routing diagram.
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit fully in each grooved pulley.
  • Take a photo before final tensioning.

Step 6: Install the belt on the last pulley

  • Use the 15mm serpentine belt wrench or ratchet to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the last pulley with your free hand.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.

Step 7: Verify belt alignment

  • Inspect every pulley to make sure the belt is centered and fully seated.
  • Look along the belt path for any twist, misalignment, or rib not seated correctly.
  • There is no torque spec for the belt itself.

Step 8: Reinstall removed parts

  • Reinstall any engine cover or intake parts removed earlier using the trim clip tool and hand tools as needed.
  • Make sure everything is fully clipped back into place.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for a few seconds.
  • Listen for squealing, chirping, or fluttering.
  • Turn on the A/C and headlights to load the belt, then recheck operation.
  • If the belt tracks off-center, shut the engine off and recheck routing.
