🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement

Your Sienna uses a single serpentine belt to drive the accessory system. Replacing it means relieving tension, removing the old belt, and routing the new one exactly the same way. If the belt is cracked, glazed, or noisy, this is the right time to replace it before it fails.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine off and completely cool.
  • Keep hands, clothing, and tools clear of the fan and pulleys.
  • The tensioner is spring-loaded, so hold it firmly while releasing tension.
  • Do not start the engine until the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm wrench
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before touching the belt area.
  • Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram under the hood or near the radiator support.
  • Take a photo of the belt route first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt and tensioner

  • Open the hood and find the serpentine belt on the front of the engine.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the belt tensioner arm and idler pulleys.
  • Check the routing diagram before removing anything.

Step 2: Relieve belt tension

  • Use a 14mm wrench or 14mm socket with ratchet on the tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension.
  • Hold the tensioner steady while slipping the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley.
  • Move slowly to avoid slipping.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • Release the tensioner carefully and pull the belt off the remaining pulleys.
  • Remove the belt from the engine bay.
  • Inspect all pulleys for roughness, wobble, or broken edges.

Step 4: Route the new belt

  • Compare the new belt to the old one to confirm length and rib count.
  • Route the new belt around the pulleys exactly like the diagram.
  • Leave the easiest pulley for last so you can slip the belt on after tension is released.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in every grooved pulley.

Step 5: Reapply tension and seat the belt

  • Use the 14mm wrench or 14mm socket with ratchet to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt fully onto the last pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt is centered in every pulley groove.
  • Torque: No fasteners are removed or torqued for the belt itself.

Step 6: Final inspection

  • Look over the full belt path one more time.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the belt is not twisted or riding on a pulley edge.
  • Close the hood once the belt is correctly seated.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for squealing or chirping.
  • Watch the belt for a few seconds to confirm it runs smoothly.
  • If you hear noise, shut the engine off and recheck the routing.
  • Reinspect the belt after a short test drive.
