š§ Corolla - Serpentine Belt Replacement
Your Corollaās serpentine (drive) belt spins the alternator, A/C compressor, and water pump. Replacing a worn or cracked belt helps prevent squealing, charging issues, and sudden belt failure.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
Assumption: Access is through the passenger-side wheel well (common on your Corolla).
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Work on a level surface and support the car with jack stands before going under or into the wheel well.
- ā ļø Keep fingers/tools clear of the belt path and pulleys. The tensioner is spring-loaded and can snap back.
- ā ļø Let the engine cool first. Pulleys and nearby parts can be hot.
- ā ļø No battery disconnect is required, but keep the key away and engine OFF at all times.
š§ Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- Wheel chocks
- 21mm socket
- 1/2" drive breaker bar
- 10mm socket
- Ratchet (3/8" drive)
- Trim clip removal tool
- 19mm combination wrench

š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
- Plastic splash shield clips - Qty: 1 set
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and locate the belt routing sticker/diagram (often on the radiator support). If itās missing, take a clear photo of the current belt routing before removal.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front passenger side
- Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front passenger-side pinch weld/jacking point.
- Set the car down onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Remove the front passenger wheel using a 21mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar.
Step 2: Remove the passenger-side splash shield (inner fender)
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic clips.
- Remove any small bolts using a 10mm socket and ratchet (3/8" drive).
- Pull the splash shield back enough to clearly see the belt and tensioner area.
Step 3: Release belt tension
- Locate the belt tensioner (a spring-loaded arm with a pulley). Tensioner = automatic belt tightener.
- Place a 19mm combination wrench on the tensionerās hex/bolt head.
- Rotate the tensioner steadily to relieve tension (it will be stiff), then slide the belt off one smooth pulley (often the alternator pulley is easiest).
- Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position. Donāt let it snap back.
Step 4: Remove the old belt and inspect pulleys
- Pull the belt out through the wheel well opening.
- Spin each pulley by hand and look for wobble, roughness, or noise.
- Check the tensioner pulley surface for cracks or chunking.
Step 5: Route the new belt
- Compare the old and new belt length/width before installing.
- Route the new belt following the under-hood diagram.
- Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits fully in the ribbed pulleys, and the smooth side sits on smooth pulleys.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the belt ribs are centered in every grooved pulley.
Step 6: Apply tension and seat the belt
- Rotate the tensioner again using the 19mm combination wrench.
- Slip the belt onto the last pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Double-check belt alignment on every pulley. Misalignment can shred a new belt fast.
Step 7: Reinstall splash shield and wheel
- Reposition the shield and reinstall bolts using a 10mm socket and ratchet (3/8" drive).
- Reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool (or by pressing them in firmly by hand).
- Reinstall the wheel using a 21mm socket.
- Lower the car off the stands using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle while you watch the belt for 30-60 seconds (from a safe distance).
- Listen for squeal, slapping, or chirping. If you hear it, shut off the engine and re-check belt routing and seating.
- Turn A/C ON and headlights ON to load the belt system and confirm it runs smoothly.
- Recheck the splash shield is secure and not rubbing the belt area.
