🔧 Explorer - Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt drives your A/C compressor, alternator, power steering pump, and water pump. Replacing it is mostly about safely releasing the belt tensioner, routing the new belt correctly, and confirming it’s seated in every pulley groove.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine; belts and pulleys can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers, hair, and clothing away from pulleys.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with any tools in the belt area.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required, but remove the key and keep it in your pocket.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive breaker bar (18"-24")
  • 3/8" drive short extension (3"-6")
  • 15mm socket
  • Flashlight
  • Smartphone camera

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt (correct length for your Explorer) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 📸 Open the hood and find the belt routing decal (usually on the radiator support/upper fan shroud area). Take a clear photo of it.
  • 📸 If the decal is missing or unreadable, take 2-3 photos of the current belt routing before removing anything.
  • 💡 Have your flashlight ready so you can confirm the belt is sitting in every groove.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the tensioner and routing diagram

  • Use a flashlight to locate the belt tensioner (it’s the spring-loaded arm with a pulley).
  • Use your smartphone camera to photograph the belt routing decal and the belt path.
  • Photos prevent routing mistakes.

Step 2: Set up your tool on the tensioner

  • On your Explorer, the tensioner is typically released using either a built-in square drive hole or a bolt head.
  • Option A (square drive): insert a 3/8" drive breaker bar (18"-24") directly into the square hole on the tensioner arm.
  • Option B (bolt head): install a 15mm socket on a 3/8" drive breaker bar (18"-24") (use a 3/8" drive short extension (3"-6") if needed).
  • Breaker bar = long handle for leverage.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • Use the 3/8" drive breaker bar (18"-24") to rotate the tensioner away from the belt to loosen it.
  • Hold the tensioner firmly; it is spring-loaded and wants to snap back.
  • While holding tension off, slide the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley (usually a smooth pulley near the top) using your free hand.

Step 4: Remove the old belt

  • Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position using the 3/8" drive breaker bar (18"-24").
  • Pull the belt out of the remaining pulleys by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect pulleys for wobble, cracking, or roughness.

Step 5: Route the new belt

  • Route the new belt exactly like the under-hood routing decal (use your smartphone camera photo as your reference).
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in ribbed pulleys, and the smooth side rides on smooth pulleys.
  • Start by wrapping the belt around the lower crank pulley first, then around the other pulleys, leaving one easiest-to-reach pulley for last.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the belt ribs are seated straight in the grooves on every grooved pulley.

Step 6: Apply tension and install the belt on the last pulley

  • Use the 3/8" drive breaker bar (18"-24") (and 15mm socket if using the bolt head) to rotate the tensioner again to create slack.
  • Slide the belt fully onto the last pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back against the belt.
  • Release slowly to avoid damage.

Step 7: Final alignment check

  • Use a flashlight and visually trace the belt around every pulley.
  • Confirm the belt is centered on smooth pulleys and fully seated in grooved pulleys (no rib riding on an edge).

✅ After Repair

  • 🔎 Before starting, remove all tools from the engine bay.
  • 🔑 Start the engine and watch the belt for 20-30 seconds; it should run smoothly with no wandering.
  • 👂 Listen for squealing, chirping, or slapping sounds; shut off immediately if you hear anything abnormal.
  • 🧾 Recheck belt seating with a flashlight after the first short drive.
