🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement

The serpentine belt drives key engine accessories like the alternator, A/C compressor, and water pump. On your Sierra, replacement is straightforward if you have good access to the belt tensioner and follow the belt routing diagram carefully.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine completely off and cool.
  • Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from the belt path.
  • Do not start the engine with the belt removed unless instructed.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want extra safety around the fan and accessory area.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing before removal.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 15mm socket
  • Long-handled breaker bar
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before reaching around the belt drive.
  • Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram on the radiator support or underside of the hood.
  • If equipped with a belt shield or intake duct blocking access, remove it first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt and tensioner

  • Open the hood and find the serpentine belt routing diagram.
  • Use a flashlight to identify the belt tensioner pulley and the square drive or hex fitting on the tensioner arm.
  • Study the routing before touching the belt.

Step 2: Release belt tension

  • Fit a 3/8-inch drive ratchet or 15mm socket on the belt tensioner, depending on the fitting style on your Sierra.
  • Rotate the tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension.
  • Hold the tensioner steady while you slip the belt off one smooth pulley, usually the easiest accessible one.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • Slowly release the tensioner with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet or 15mm socket.
  • Pull the old belt off all pulleys by hand.
  • Inspect the belt path for oil, coolant, or damaged pulley grooves.

Step 4: Inspect pulleys and tensioner

  • Spin each accessible pulley by hand and check for roughness, noise, or wobble.
  • Use the flashlight to inspect the tensioner arm for weak spring action or cracks.
  • If any pulley feels rough, replace that component before installing the new belt.

Step 5: Route the new belt

  • Route the new serpentine belt around all pulleys except one easy-to-reach pulley for last.
  • Follow the under-hood routing diagram exactly.
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit fully in every grooved pulley.
  • Keep the belt flat and untwisted.

Step 6: Install the belt on the last pulley

  • Rotate the tensioner again with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet or 15mm socket.
  • Slip the belt onto the final pulley while holding tension off the belt.
  • Slowly release the tensioner and let it take up the slack.

Step 7: Verify installation

  • Inspect every pulley again with the flashlight to confirm the belt is seated correctly.
  • Check that the belt is centered on each pulley and not riding on the edge.
  • Manually rotate the engine only if you know how and need to verify routing; otherwise, proceed to startup.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for the first 30 seconds.
  • Listen for squealing, chirping, or slapping noises.
  • Turn the steering wheel and switch the A/C on to load the belt slightly and confirm smooth operation.
  • If the belt tracks off-center or makes noise, shut the engine off and recheck routing and pulley condition.
