🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement

The serpentine belt drives key accessories like the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor. On your Silverado, replacement is straightforward, but you must release the belt tensioner correctly so the new belt seats in every pulley groove.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine off and completely cool.
  • Keep hands, tools, and clothing away from the belt path.
  • Do not start the engine while the belt is off.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive breaker bar
  • 15mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
  • Raise the front of the truck only if you need better access from below.
  • Check the belt routing sticker near the radiator support.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt path

  • Open the hood and find the belt routing diagram on the radiator support or fan shroud.
  • If the sticker is missing, take a clear photo of the current belt before removing it.
  • Make sure you can identify the tensioner pulley and all accessory pulleys before starting.

Step 2: Relieve belt tension

  • Use a 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or 15mm socket on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner away from the belt to unload spring tension.
  • Move slowly to avoid slipping.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • With the tension released, slip the belt off one smooth pulley.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys and take it out of the engine bay.

Step 4: Inspect all pulleys

  • Use a flashlight to check each pulley for cracks, wobble, or rough spinning.
  • Spin the idler pulley and tensioner pulley by hand if accessible. They should turn smoothly and quietly.
  • Look for oil or coolant leaks that may damage the new belt.

Step 5: Install the new belt

  • Route the new belt according to the diagram.
  • Leave the easiest-to-reach pulley for last, usually one of the smooth upper pulleys.
  • Use the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar or 15mm socket to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt fully onto the last pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt sits centered in every pulley groove.

Step 6: Verify alignment

  • Inspect the full belt path with a flashlight.
  • Make sure the belt is not twisted and is fully seated on all grooved pulleys.
  • Confirm the ribbed side of the belt rides on ribbed pulleys and the smooth side rides on smooth pulleys.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for squealing, chirping, or rubbing noises.
  • Watch the belt for a few seconds to confirm it tracks straight.
  • Turn the steering wheel slightly and switch on the A/C to verify accessory operation.
  • Shut the engine off and recheck belt seating after the first run.
