🔧 Serpentine Belt - Replacement

The serpentine belt drives key accessories on your Tacoma, including the alternator and water pump drive components. Replacing it is straightforward, but belt routing must be correct and the tensioner must be released smoothly to avoid damage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Engine must be completely off and cool before starting.
  • Keep hands, hair, and clothing away from the belt path and pulleys.
  • Do not pry on the belt tensioner arm. Use the correct socket and steady pressure.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 14mm socket
  • Long-handled breaker bar
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing before removing it. Photo first, removal second.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt routing

  • Open the hood and find the serpentine belt path on the front of the engine.
  • Use a flashlight to trace how the belt runs around each pulley.
  • Take a clear photo for reference before removal.

Step 2: Release belt tension

  • Use a 14mm socket on the belt tensioner bolt.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension.
  • Move it smoothly.

Step 3: Remove the old belt

  • While holding the tensioner released, slip the belt off one easy-to-reach pulley.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to rest.
  • Remove the belt from all pulleys by hand.

Step 4: Install the new belt

  • Route the new belt around the pulleys exactly like the old one.
  • Leave the easiest pulley for last so you can slip the belt on while the tensioner is released.
  • Use the 14mm socket again to rotate the tensioner and install the final belt section.
  • Make sure the belt ribs sit fully in every pulley groove.

Step 5: Inspect the installation

  • Check every pulley to confirm the belt is seated straight.
  • Look for twisted sections or ribs sitting on top of a pulley edge.
  • Spin any accessible smooth idler pulley by hand and make sure it turns freely.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for squealing or chirping.
  • Watch the belt for 30-60 seconds to make sure it tracks correctly.
  • If you hear noise or see wandering, shut the engine off and recheck routing.
