šŸ”§ Grand Cherokee - Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt drives key accessories like the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C. Replacing it is mostly about safely relieving belt tension, routing the new belt correctly, and verifying it’s seated in every pulley groove.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a cool engine—hands and belt route are close to hot parts.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers/hair/clothing away from pulleys; never run the engine with hands near the belt.
  • āš ļø If lifting the SUV, support it with jack stands before going under.
  • āš ļø Do not pry the belt onto pulleys with screwdrivers; it can damage ribs and pulley edges.
  • šŸ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the key fob away so the engine can’t be started accidentally.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar (18" minimum)
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 8mm socket
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Plastic push clips (splash shield/fender liner) - Qty: 2-6

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • šŸ…æļø Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • šŸ”¦ Locate the belt routing diagram (usually a sticker under the hood). If it’s missing, take a clear photo of the current routing before removal.
  • 🧠 The belt ā€œtensionerā€ is a spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight; you rotate it with a tool to remove/install the belt.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access (top side)

  • Open the hood and remove the front plastic engine cover if equipped (pull upward by hand at the corners).
  • If the air inlet tube blocks access, loosen the clamps using an 8mm socket and move the tube aside.
  • Use a flashlight to identify the belt tensioner pulley and the tensioner’s hex for a socket.

Step 2: Lift the right-front (recommended for easiest routing)

  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Lift the right-front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and set the SUV on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the right-front wheel using a 21mm socket.
  • Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs) when reinstalling the wheel.

Step 3: Remove the right inner fender liner/splash shield (for pulley visibility)

  • Remove the plastic push pins/screws using a trim clip removal tool and 8mm socket.
  • Peel the liner back enough to see the crank pulley and belt path clearly.
  • Bag the clips so none get lost.

Step 4: Relieve belt tension

  • Place a 15mm socket on the belt tensioner hex.
  • Attach a 1/2" drive breaker bar (18" minimum) for leverage.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve tension (it will feel spring-loaded and strong).
  • While holding tension released, slide the belt off the easiest-to-reach smooth pulley (often the idler or alternator pulley).
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to rest—do not let it snap back.

Step 5: Remove the old belt

  • Pull the belt out from the remaining pulleys by hand from the top and through the wheel-well opening.
  • Inspect pulleys with a flashlight:
    • Ribbed pulleys should be clean and not wobble.
    • Smooth pulleys should spin quietly without grinding.

Step 6: Route the new belt

  • Compare the new belt to the old belt (same length and rib count).
  • Route the belt following the under-hood diagram:
    • Ribbed side runs on ribbed pulleys.
    • Smooth side runs on smooth pulleys (like the tensioner pulley).
  • Leave the belt off one easy pulley until last (choose the most accessible from the top).
  • Make sure ribs are fully seated in grooves.

Step 7: Apply tension and finish installation

  • Use the 15mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt over the last pulley by hand (no prying tools).
  • Slowly release the tensioner so it applies tension to the belt.
  • Re-check every pulley: the belt must be centered and fully in the grooves.

Step 8: Reassemble

  • Reinstall the fender liner/splash shield using the trim clip removal tool and 8mm socket.
  • Reinstall the wheel using a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the SUV from the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs) for wheel lug nuts.
  • Reinstall the intake tube (if moved) using the 8mm socket.
  • Reinstall the engine cover (press into place by hand).

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸ” Before starting, do one last visual check that the belt is seated on every pulley.
  • ā–¶ļø Start the engine and let it idle 20–30 seconds while you watch the belt track (keep hands/tools away).
  • šŸ‘‚ Listen for squeal/chirp; if present, shut off and re-check routing and pulley seating.
  • 🧪 Take a short test drive, then re-check belt alignment again with the engine off.
