🔧 Tacoma - Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt drives accessories like the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor. Replacing it is mostly about safely releasing the automatic belt tensioner, swapping the belt, and making sure it’s seated correctly on every pulley.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Work on a cool engine; keep hands away from hot parts and the fan.
  • 🔑 Remove the key and keep it in your pocket so nobody can start it.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the tensioner while releasing it (it’s spring-loaded).
  • 🔋 Recommended for beginners: disconnect the negative battery cable before routing the belt.
  • 👀 Never run the engine with hands/tools near the belt path.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 14mm combination wrench
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 14mm socket
  • Flashlight
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, transmission in neutral, parking brake set.
  • 📌 Look for the belt routing diagram sticker under the hood (or take a clear photo of your current routing before removal).
  • 🔋 Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench and move it aside so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the belt routing and identify the tensioner

  • Use a flashlight to find the belt routing diagram under the hood.
  • Find the automatic belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm with a pulley). It keeps belt tension automatically.
  • Find the hex you’ll use to rotate the tensioner: either a hex on the tensioner arm or the bolt head at the center of the tensioner pulley (Toyota uses one of these styles).

Step 2: Relieve belt tension

  • Put a 14mm socket on a 3/8" drive ratchet, or use a 14mm combination wrench, on the tensioner hex.
  • Rotate the tensioner smoothly to relieve tension (you’ll feel the spring resistance).
  • While holding the tensioner rotated, slide the belt off the easiest-to-reach smooth pulley (often the idler or tensioner pulley).
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position. Don’t let it snap back.

Step 3: Remove the old belt and inspect pulleys

  • Pull the belt out of the engine bay by hand.
  • Spin each pulley by hand and feel for roughness or wobble.
  • Check for oil/coolant leaks dripping onto the belt path (a leak can ruin a new belt fast).

Step 4: Route the new belt (match your under-hood diagram)

  • Route the new belt around the pulleys following the under-hood routing diagram.
  • If equipped with A/C: make sure the belt wraps the A/C compressor pulley correctly per the sticker.
  • If not equipped with A/C: the routing will bypass the compressor location and use a different belt path/length.
  • Make sure the ribbed side of the belt sits in the grooves of ribbed pulleys, and the flat side rides on smooth pulleys.
  • Leave the belt off one easy pulley last (usually a smooth idler) so you can slip it on after releasing the tensioner.

Step 5: Apply tension and seat the belt

  • Rotate the tensioner again using the 14mm socket with 3/8" drive ratchet or 14mm combination wrench.
  • Slip the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Use a flashlight to double-check the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove (this is the most common mistake).

Step 6: Reconnect battery and do a quick run check

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.
  • Start the engine and watch the belt for 10-15 seconds (keep hands clear).
  • Listen for squealing or slapping sounds; shut off immediately if the belt looks like it’s walking off a pulley.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Recheck belt alignment after a short test drive (2-5 minutes).
  • 🧼 If you saw any oil/coolant on the old belt, fix the leak soon to protect the new belt.
  • 📝 If there’s belt noise, recheck that every rib is seated in the pulley grooves.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $150-$300 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $25-$60 (parts only)

You Save: $125-$240 by doing it yourself!
