1500 Classic - Rear Window Regulator Replacement 🔧
On your 1500 Classic Crew Cab, the rear window regulator is the mechanism inside the rear door that moves the glass up and down. I’ll walk you through replacing one rear door regulator (left or right) — the steps are almost the same for both.
Quick check first: Is your truck equipped with manual crank rear windows or power rear windows? The steps are slightly different at the start.
- 📝 Reply with: “manual” or “power” for the rear windows, and which side you’re doing first (left rear or right rear).
Below, I’ll give the full guide for the more common setup: power rear windows. If yours are manual, say so and I’ll add the few extra steps for the crank handle.
1500 Classic - Safety & Prep ⚠️
- ⚠️ Safety first
- Turn ignition OFF and remove the key.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable (10 mm nut) to avoid accidental window movement or short circuits.
- Work on a flat surface, parking brake set.
- 🧰 Tools you’ll need
- Socket set (metric): 8 mm, 10 mm, 13 mm sockets, ratchet, short extension.
- Torx bits: T20 and T25 (for door panel screws).
- Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool to pop clips without scratching).
- Small flat screwdriver (for covers and clips).
- Phillips screwdriver.
- Painter’s tape or masking tape (to hold the glass up).
- Needle-nose pliers (for clips/connectors).
- Work light so you can see inside the door.
- 📦 Parts you’ll need
- Rear door window regulator (side-specific: left rear or right rear).
- If your truck has power windows: regulator with motor assembly is usually sold as one unit.
- Optional: new door panel clips (some may break when removed).
1500 Classic - Rear Door Panel Removal 🚪
These steps are for one rear door at a time.
- Disconnect the battery 🔋
- Open the hood.
- Use a 10 mm socket to loosen the nut on the negative (black) battery terminal.
- Lift the cable off and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
- Remove trim covers hiding screws 🪛
- On the rear door, look at the interior door pull handle (where you grab to close the door). There is usually a small plastic cover in the recess.
- Use a small flat screwdriver or trim tool to gently pry off the cover and expose a screw.
- Check near the inside door handle bezel (the handle you pull to open the door) for another small cover hiding a screw.
- Remove door panel screws 🔩
- Remove the screws in the pull handle and near the inside handle using a Torx T20/T25 or Phillips (depends on build; try Torx first).
- Check along the bottom edge of the door panel for 1–2 more screws and remove them.
- Pop the door panel clips 📎
- Slide a plastic trim tool between the door panel and metal door at the bottom corner.
- Gently pry outward to pop the first clip. You’ll hear it “pop.”
- Work your way around the sides and bottom, popping all the clips.
- Lift the door panel off 🧱
- Once all clips are loose, lift the panel straight up to unhook it from the top edge near the window.
- Don’t pull it too far away yet; there are wires behind it.
- Disconnect wiring and handle cable 🔌
- Unplug the power window switch connector by pressing the tab and pulling the plug out.
- At the inside door handle, you’ll see a cable clipped into the panel:
- Pop the plastic retainer out of its bracket.
- Rotate the cable and unhook the cable end from the handle.
- Set the door panel aside somewhere safe.
- Remove the water shield / vapor barrier đź’§
- You’ll see a plastic sheet stuck to the door with butyl adhesive (sticky black glue).
- Carefully peel it back starting at a corner. Try not to tear it; you’ll reuse it.
- Peel it back enough to access the regulator and glass area.
1500 Classic - Securing the Glass & Removing the Regulator 🪟
- Position and secure the glass 🎯
- If the window is stuck up: leave it up and secure it with painter’s tape from the outside of the glass over the top of the door frame and down the other side.
- If the window is down: you may need to temporarily reconnect the window switch and battery to move it until you can access the glass clamps, then disconnect again.
- Locate the glass-to-regulator clamps 🔍
- Look through the large access holes in the inner door metal.
- You’ll see the regulator tracks and where the glass attaches with 2 bolts (usually 10 mm).
- Loosen the glass clamp bolts 🔧
- Use a 10 mm socket to loosen (do not fully remove) the two bolts that clamp the glass to the regulator sliders.
- Once loose, gently lift the glass fully up by hand.
- Secure the glass in the fully up position with several strips of painter’s tape on the outside.
- Unplug the window motor 🔌
- Find the window motor (round or oval unit attached to the regulator).
- Press the tab on the electrical connector and unplug it.
- Remove regulator and motor mounting bolts 🪛
- There will be several bolts (usually 10 mm) holding:
- The regulator tracks to the door.
- The motor to the door.
- Remove all these bolts. Keep track of them; you’ll reuse them.
- There will be several bolts (usually 10 mm) holding:
- Remove the regulator assembly 🧩
- Carefully maneuver the regulator and motor assembly out through the large access opening in the door.
- Note the orientation so you can install the new one the same way.
1500 Classic - Installing the New Regulator âś…
- Install the new regulator assembly 📦
- Feed the new regulator and motor into the door through the access opening.
- Align the mounting holes in the regulator and motor with the holes in the door.
- Install and torque the mounting bolts 🔩
- Install all the regulator and motor bolts finger-tight first.
- Then snug them with a 10 mm socket.
- Torque spec (typical Ram rear regulator bolts): about 8–10 N·m (70–90 in-lb). Snug plus a small turn if you don’t have a torque wrench.
- Reconnect the motor connector 🔌
- Plug the electrical connector back into the window motor until it clicks.
- Attach the glass to the new regulator 🪟
- Carefully remove some of the tape holding the glass, while still supporting it with one hand.
- Lower the glass slowly until it sits in the new regulator clamps.
- Make sure the glass is centered in the window run channels (front and rear felt tracks).
- Tighten the two glass clamp bolts (10 mm) securely.
- Torque spec (glass clamp bolts): about 8–10 N·m (70–90 in-lb).
- Reconnect battery and test operation 🔄
- Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the 10 mm nut.
- Temporarily plug the window switch back into the door harness (you can do this without fully reinstalling the panel).
- Turn ignition to RUN.
- Run the window up and down several times:
- Listen for smooth, quiet operation.
- Check that the glass doesn’t tilt or bind.
- Turn ignition OFF again.
1500 Classic - Reassembly 🧱
- Reinstall the vapor barrier đź’§
- Press the plastic sheet back into place, sealing it all the way around.
- Make sure there are no big gaps; this keeps water out of the cabin.
- Reconnect handle cable and wiring đź”—
- Hook the cable end back into the inside door handle.
- Clip the cable housing back into its bracket.
- Plug the window switch connector back into the door panel.
- Reinstall the door panel 🚪
- Hang the top of the door panel on the top edge of the door (by the window).
- Once it’s seated, push around the edges to snap all the clips back into the door.
- Reinstall screws and trim covers 🪛
- Reinstall all the screws in the pull handle, near the inside handle, and along the bottom edge.
- Snap the plastic trim covers back over the screws.
- Final test âś…
- Turn ignition ON.
- Test the rear window switch on that door and from the driver’s master switch.
- Check for rattles by closing the door firmly and driving over a small bump if possible.
1500 Classic - Tips & Tricks đź’ˇ
- 🧽 Keep track of clips – If a white or yellow plastic clip stays in the door instead of the panel, move it back to the panel before reinstallation.
- 🧵 Don’t overtighten – The regulator bolts go into thin sheet metal; too much force can strip them.
- 🧲 Use a magnetic pickup tool if you drop a bolt inside the door.
