🔧 Prius - Rear Window Regulator Replacement
The rear window regulator is the track-and-cable (or scissor) mechanism that moves the window glass up and down. On your Prius, replacement means removing the rear door trim panel, securing the glass, unbolting the regulator/motor assembly, then reinstalling and testing for smooth operation.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (per side)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the regulator while powered—pinch hazard.
- ⚠️ Support the window glass with tape before loosening the glass clamps to prevent it from dropping.
- ⚠️ Do not pry near the side-curtain airbag area (upper door/roofline); work only on the door panel.
- 🔋 If you disconnect the 12V battery, the window won’t move—finish positioning/securing the glass first.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear window regulator assembly (Left or Right, match your side) - Qty: 1
- Rear window regulator motor (if not included with regulator) - Qty: 1
- Rear door trim panel clips - Qty: 6-10
- Butyl door vapor-barrier tape - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Prius on level ground and turn the car OFF.
- Lower the affected rear window to about halfway if possible (this lines up the glass clamp bolts).
- Have painter’s tape ready to secure the glass to the door frame.
- If you plan to disconnect the 12V battery: do it only after the glass is taped up and cannot fall.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which side you’re doing and prep the door
- Open the rear door fully and set up your work light.
- Tip: Do one door at a time.
Step 2: Remove the rear door trim panel
- Use a trim removal tool set to gently pry up the switch panel (window switch) and unplug the connector using needle-nose pliers only if needed to release the lock tab.
- Remove visible screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (commonly at the pull handle area).
- Use panel clip pliers to pop the door panel clips around the perimeter (you’ll hear snaps).
- Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge, then set it aside.
- Tip: Pull straight out to save clips.
Step 3: Remove the vapor barrier (water shield) carefully
- Peel back the plastic vapor barrier slowly by hand.
- If the sticky sealant stretches, use the trim removal tool set to help separate it without tearing.
- Keep the barrier clean so it reseals; you may need butyl door vapor-barrier tape later.
Step 4: Secure the window glass
- Use painter’s tape (1.5" wide) to tape the glass to the door frame at the top edge (use 2–3 long strips).
- If the glass is down and the regulator won’t move it: support the glass from below with one hand while you tape it, then gently lift it to the top.
- Tip: Extra tape is cheaper than glass.
Step 5: Disconnect the regulator motor electrical connector
- Unplug the regulator motor connector by pressing the lock tab using the trim removal tool set (gentle pressure).
Step 6: Unbolt the glass from the regulator (glass clamps)
- Through the access holes, use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the two glass clamp bolts.
- Once bolts are out, confirm the glass is still firmly held by the painter’s tape.
- On reassembly: Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb).
Step 7: Remove the regulator and motor assembly
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
- If your replacement regulator does not include the motor: remove the motor fasteners using a 10mm socket and transfer the motor to the new regulator.
- Carefully maneuver the regulator out through the service opening in the door.
- On reassembly: Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb).
Step 8: Install the new regulator
- Place the new regulator into the door and align it to the mounting points by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading), then tighten using the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Finish tightening with the torque wrench (inch‑pound, 20–200 in‑lb): Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb).
Step 9: Reattach the glass to the regulator
- Lower/raise the regulator as needed to line up the clamp holes:
- If the 12V battery is connected, temporarily plug in the window switch and turn the car to READY, then move the regulator slightly.
- Turn the car OFF before putting hands back inside the door.
- Install the glass clamp bolts using the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Tighten with the torque wrench (inch‑pound, 20–200 in‑lb): Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb).
- Remove the painter’s tape only after the glass is fully secured.
Step 10: Test window operation before reassembly
- Reconnect the regulator motor connector.
- Temporarily plug in the switch and cycle the window fully down/up.
- Listen for clicking/grinding and watch for the glass tilting—if it tilts, loosen clamps slightly, re-seat glass, then re-torque.
Step 11: Reinstall the vapor barrier and door panel
- Press the vapor barrier back onto the door. If the seal is weak, apply butyl door vapor-barrier tape.
- Hang the door panel on the top lip first, then press clips in around the edge with your hands.
- Reinstall screws using the Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Reconnect the window switch and snap the switch panel back in using the trim removal tool set.
âś… After Repair
- Cycle the rear window 5–10 times to confirm smooth travel and no binding.
- Check that the door opens/closes normally and the panel is fully clipped (no rattles).
- If auto-up/down behavior seems off: cycle the window fully down, then fully up and hold the switch up for 2–3 seconds.
- Verify the window seals against the weatherstrip evenly (no wind gap).
