🔧 Rear Window Regulator - Replacement

The rear window regulator moves the glass up and down inside the door. On your RAV4, the inner door trim has to come off first, then the glass is detached from the regulator and the regulator assembly is removed through the door opening.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours per door

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The rear door contains side airbag components.
  • Support the window glass with tape before removing the regulator. The glass can drop suddenly.
  • Keep hands clear of the regulator tracks. The mechanism can pinch fingers.
  • Work with the window fully closed if possible before disassembly.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Trim removal tool
  • Ratchet
  • Small extension
  • Torque wrench
  • Painter’s tape
  • Pick tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear window regulator assembly - Qty: 2 if replacing both rear doors
  • Door panel clip set - Qty: 1
  • Door vapor barrier adhesive - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Raise the affected window as high as it will go before disconnecting the battery if it still works.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before opening the door trim.
  • Use painter’s tape to secure the glass to the door frame before removing the regulator.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear door trim panel

  • Use a trim removal tool to pry off the trim covers and access screws.
  • Remove the visible fasteners with a Phillips screwdriver and 10mm socket.
  • Carefully pop the panel clips loose around the edge of the door.
  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the top ledge.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Disconnect electrical connectors and remove the vapor barrier

  • Unplug the window switch connector and any courtesy light connector.
  • Peel back the vapor barrier carefully. Reuse it if it is still intact.
  • Use a pick tool to release stubborn adhesive without tearing the barrier.

Step 3: Secure the glass

  • Raise the glass fully if it still operates, then tape it to the door frame using painter’s tape.
  • If the glass is already stuck or loose, support it by hand while the regulator is disconnected.
  • Do not let the glass hang unsupported.

Step 4: Disconnect the glass from the regulator

  • Remove the access hole covers inside the door.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the glass clamp fasteners.
  • Slide the glass up slightly by hand if needed, then lift it out of the regulator clamps.
  • Keep the glass taped in the up position.

Step 5: Remove the old regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
  • Unplug the motor connector from the regulator assembly.
  • Rotate and maneuver the regulator out through the largest service opening in the door.
  • Torque on reassembly: tighten regulator mounting bolts to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).

Step 6: Install the new regulator

  • Feed the new regulator into the door opening and align it with the mounting points.
  • Start all bolts by hand before tightening.
  • Reconnect the motor connector.
  • Tighten the regulator bolts with a torque wrench to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reattach the glass

  • Lower the taped glass carefully into the regulator clamps.
  • Align the glass with the clamp openings and tighten the glass fasteners with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque the glass clamp bolts to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
  • Remove the painter’s tape after the glass is fully secured.

Step 8: Test the window before reassembly

  • Reconnect the battery temporarily and cycle the window switch.
  • Check that the glass moves smoothly and stays aligned in the tracks.
  • If the window binds, stop and realign the glass before reinstalling the panel.
  • Disconnect the battery again before finishing the door assembly.

Step 9: Reinstall the vapor barrier and door panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place with firm even pressure.
  • Reconnect all electrical connectors.
  • Hang the door panel on the top edge first, then press the clips into place.
  • Reinstall all screws and trim covers with a Phillips screwdriver and 10mm socket.
  • Torque door trim fasteners to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Cycle the rear window up and down several times.
  • Listen for clicking, binding, or grinding.
  • Check that the glass seats evenly at the top seal.
  • Verify the door panel is fully clipped in and all switches work.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $350-$700 per door (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $90-$220 per door (parts only)

You Save: $260-$480 per door by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-4 hours per door.
